McNeese 11-23 on FTs in a 2OT game
McNeese got another stop at the end of 2OT to force 3OT

They also benefited from a 10s violation during 2OT that seemed to be due to the shot clock starting too early. But the refs reviewed it and let it stand. Maybe not conclusive?

Tonight's tournament bids clinched:

-WCC: Gonzaga defeated Santa Clara 79-68.
-CAA: Hofstra defeated Monmouth 75-69. It is the Pride's fifth tournament appearance, their first since 2001. They did qualify for the 2020 tournament that was later cancelled because of covid.
-NEC: LIU defeats Mercyhurst 79-70. Sharks had already clinched the conference's tournament bid over the weekend.
-Horizon League: Wright State defeated Detroit Mercy 66-63. It is the Raiders' fifth tournament appearance, their first since 2022.
-MAAC: Siena defeated Merrimack 64-54. It is the Saints' 7th tournament appearance, their first since 2010.

That's flat out dreadful.

Pro tip: If Illinois get a St. Louis pod, they can't get BYU as a round of 32 opponent.
I think I'd be in the camp of welcoming to draw BYU. Not a good rebounding team and horrible defensively.

And while Dynbasta is world-class, it's the guards in pick and roll who create for themselves and others i dislike.

I also think their record against any top 30 Kenpom team is very poor, outside of the Iowa State result 2 weeks ago.
I’d definitely welcome them as a 6 seed if we’re the 2. They have the potential to knock the 3 — and aren’t scary enough to the point we can’t beat them in a S16.

And yes, they are very bad defensively.

Ok, sitting at 2-0 after BTT Day 1.

Today I've got:
Iowa over Maryland
Northwestern over Indiana (upset special)
Minnesota over Rutgers
Washington over USC

We'll see. Northwestern has had Indiana's number this year and historically Indiana has been abysmal in the tourney (though Northwestern has been worse). Indiana is pretty much directly on the bubble too, so will be interesting to see how tight they play.

Maryland looked pretty good for about 35 minutes last night. Not uncommon for a bad team to get hot and go on a little run in the BTT. If they took out Iowa would that make anyone feel better? Because it would make me feel better.

Fun BTT facts:
1. Indiana-Northwestern matches up the 2 BTT worst historic performers of the original Big 10+PSU. Indiana and Northwestern have never won a BTT title and have played in only 1 Final way back in 2001. They have combined for 28 wins in 28 seasons. For reference, Illinois has won 35 games alone in that same period.. Hard not to get a kick out of "blue blood" Indiana being one of the worst teams in BTT history.

2. From 1998-2010, Illinois did not qualify for the semis only once. During this period Illinois made the Finals 6 times with 2 Championships. Illinois would then have to wait 11 years to return to the semifinals where in 2021 they won the BTT.

3. The Brad Underwood tenure has been boom or bust in the BTT. Either we've won it all or we don't get past the Quarters. So if we win Friday... Well, we'll, we'll.

4. 3 of Illinois' 4 BTT Titles have been won at the United Center.

5. MSU, OSU, Illinois, and Wisconsin have combined for 17 BTT titles and 33 Finals appearances in 27 title games. The other 14 teams? 10BTT and 21 Finals appearances combined.

Michigan understandably the heavy favorite to win the BTT. We're next, followed by Purdue, MSU and NB. Interesting Purdue getting that much love as a 7 seed having to play one more game.

Only 2 of 4 in Chicago. 2021 got moved to Indy and 2024 was Minneapolis.

Just for fun, but here is your wall of shame for the BTT ... teams who have gone home on the first day since 2015 (the first year the BTT began as early as Wednesday due to conference expansion).

Rutgers - 2015, 2016, 2019, 2024, 2025
Nebraska - 2015, 2017, 2021, 2022, 2023
Minnesota - 2016, 2018, 2022, 2025
Ohio State - 2017, 2025
Northwestern - 2019, 2021
Penn State - 2026
Oregon - 2026
Michigan - 2024
Wisconsin - 2023
Illinois - 2018

If we keep the Wednesday threshold (this is the first year it has ever begun on Tuesday), the following teams all risk joining the club or adding another year by their names:

Maryland or Iowa
USC or Washington
Indiana or Northwestern
Rutgers or Minnesota

And one last bit of fun, all-time records by each team in the BTT since 1998:

Michigan State: 36-21 (.632)
Ohio State: 34-20 (.630)
Illinois: 35-23 (.603)
Wisconsin: 35-24 (.571)
Michigan: 28-22 (.560)
Iowa: 23-24 (.489)
Purdue: 21-25 (.457)
Penn State: 21-26 (.447)
Minnesota: 19-25 (.432)
Indiana: 17-27 (.386)
Maryland: 6-10 (.375)
Rutgers: 5-10 (.333)
Nebraska: 6-13 (.316)
Northwestern: 11-28 (.282)

USC: 1-1 (.500)
Oregon: 1-1 (.500)
Washington: 0-0 (.500) [didn't make it last year]
UCLA: 0-1 (.000)

Given how often the BTT has been in Indy, I find Indiana's putrid record pretty hilarious, haha. Also, it's impressive that we still have such a good record in the BTT (winning 2 in the last 5 years helps!), but it's even more impressive when you consider that we were so bad in it from 2011 to 2019, with a record of 5-9 (.357). It's also TRULY amazing just how well we played in the 7 Big Ten Tournaments from its inception in 1998 through 2005.

- 16-8 (.667) overall record
- 13-4 (.765) record in Chicago, specifically
- 2 BTT championships
- 5 BTT championship appearances in 7 years
- 7 BTT semifinals appearances in 7 years

Let's get back to owning the BTT, especially when it's in Chicago!!

As usual, nice post! My only question is if the bolded part was intentional? 🤷‍♂️

We were so far ahead of everyone else up until 2010ish. Take out just a few of those gutter years and we have more than 40 total wins. Oh well, at least that's over with and we're only going up (y)
