Why? Because they don’t account for recency bias fueled, emotional hot takes?
People not intent on digging their feet in the sand might also call this a trend. We are 4-5 in our last nine games, and that is objectively the most relevant window into what our NCAA Tournament prospects look like as of now. Could they improve, and could we see the same squad that won 12 straight next week? Of course. But it's absurd to accuse people of "recency bias" (much less having emotional hot takes, what an unfair thing to say to anyone with eyes to see right now...) for allowing their opinion on this team's ceiling to change with, ya know ... the reality we are witnessing.

Question
In the first seconds, our best guard goes Mano a Mano against their best guard and WINS the encounter
Both get technicals for jawing
We bench our guy and their guy lights us up for 30+
Which coach won that battle?
I don’t think he was benched for that but for getting his 2 nd personal on the next play.

We shouldve won but missed FTs and such its tough.

That said. That was one of the most poorly officiated games i have seen with multiple blown calls or anticipated whistles that killed the Illini after hustling to get stops, loose balls and time outs. It was just a very poorly called game.
It was poorly officiated both ways. It just seemed more lopsided because one team took advantage by being more aggressive.

That wasn’t my point. It’s just how a person feels RIGHT AFTER a loss is significantly more emotion-fueled than say, 3 or 4 days later — which is the “recency bias” I’m referencing.

Analytics don’t take into consideration that right-after-loss emotional meltdown.

I didn't say anything two months ago when the 3s were going in, but why is anyone surprised by this? It was always unsustainable.

Does not make the observations invalid. Jesus

As opposed to the primacy bias of saying over and over how well we played 2-3 months ago?

haven't read the whole thread...I'm sure it's all been said already. Soft, no heart p*ss poor coaching...and hey, way to go senior leader Boswell with one of the most stupid and senseless technicals I've ever seen. And it only took to 30 seconds...you really showed Boyd what a man you are.

The game plan was so obvious a 2nd grader could have figured it out. Attack the rim, attack the rim, attack the rim. I think someone mentioned it in the pregame thread. Oh wait...I DID! (yes I'm patting myself on the back).

This team just doesn't make winning plays at winning time....and that is squarely in the shoulders of a highly (over) paid coaching staff. Tired of losing games we should win in such embarrasing ways.

And saving this for my last thought because it didn't lose us this game...but holy freaking sh*t....the officiating office in the big ten needs to have a come to jesus moment and pull their heads out of their collective arses. They make one carrying call on that DB Boyd and they could have called it a hundred times. The overacting, the touch fouls, the phantom fouls, the no calls, the massive incosistency is absolutely maddening. Even Blackwell laughed when he drew the foul by falling to the floor. Because that's what you do for a good joke...you laugh. And Big Ten officiating is the biggest joke yet. It's really getting old.

we benched our guy because he got his second foul though.

And, i'm not in favor of "auto-benching" in the first half with 2 fouls, which brad sometimes does. but if you pick up 2 fouls in the first 50 seconds, you're gonna sit. That's ironclad
I thought he got pulled after the technical, the first foul.
This is the BIG Defensive POY and a senior. Surely that counts for something

Regardless, when Boyd got number 2, according to the play by play announcers Gard and coaches wanted to pull him, but he said no way.

That's fair, but you don't always need analytics to make an informed opinion (regardless of how far after a loss it is). I think our first loss to Wisconsin is an example of a time when fans (including me) were probably too harsh and emotional right after the loss, and with time it didn't seem as big of a deal. I guess we'll wait until next week to be 100% sure, but that is not how I see this one. We didn't have injuries, and this is the time of year we should look more cohesive as a unit than any other. Sure, this is subjective, but it's also flat-out true ... the "type of team" we were today (everything from our offense to our defensive intensity to our composure) had a lot more in common with the November Illini than the January Illini ... and it's fair for fans to be really concerned about that.

I hope more than anyone that this is a blip on the radar of a special season. But winning 20+ games, finishing in the top 4 of the Big Ten and making the Second Round won't be a season of any notable achievement for this program ... it's been done here tons of times. And that would be truly unfortunate for this group, because they're capable of so much more.

There were some shorter stretches of the game where it was a wrestling match with no calls. But, yes, UW took more advantage of the longer stretches of whistle-fest

But dammit we lead the nation in offensive efficiency. Come on, man! Don't be so negative!

Edit: I'm truly not trying to offend anyone with this post! I am trying to bring levity to a !!!!!! situation! I swear!

I think I’ve voiced enough negativity, now time of a little dose of optimism.

Here are all the things that were out of character/went wrong this game:
1. We are one of the top offensive rebounding teams in the nation. We only got 9 of 35 misses back, just a shade over 25% and well below our average.
2. We are an excellent free throw team. Shot 60% today but probably closer to 50% because we missed 2 front ends.
3. We are a decent to good three point shooting team. Shot under 30%.
4. Our biggest weakness is quick athletic guards (every team has weaknesses, some more pronounced than others). We played a team with probably the best pair of quick athletic guards in the country. And our best on ball defender picks up 2 fouls in the first minute.
5. And what the heck, we are one of the top teams in the country in free throw disparity, outshot 30-15. Multiple times Blackwell and Boy were grinning ear to ear because refs bought their flops.

And after all of that, against a team that’s a tough matchup for us and is playing pretty well (saw one commenter say they are playing the level of a 2 or 3 seed and I agree), we are left with a bad taste in our mouth after a loss because we blew 2 separate 15 point leads and missed several free throws down the stretch to close the game.

Now the pessimist in me sees a trend and I don’t think we are playing our best ball and we look really shaky. But I’ve been saying all year, an awful stinking lot has to go wrong for us to lose a basketball game.

We revert to our form and we are still a wagon. Will we regain our form? Right now my inner pessimist is winning the debate with my inner optimist. But the point stands if we play our game we will be a tough out. I truly hope it’s just tired legs and another 6 days will make the difference and my optimist wins out. My pessimist says we crested about 3 weeks ago.

First half: WI shoots 2 free throws
Second half: WI shoots 18 free throws
OT: WI shoots 10 free throws

^ that should tell you a lot right there...when almost half of WI's free throws were from phantom fouls or fouls that wouldn't be called at the other end, that changes the outcome of the game.
