Ouch Wiscy. Having a star player leave and saying on their way out that they'd rather be on a team hunting a Natty.
Glad Illinois is one of those teams :)
It sucks. But that's how college ball is these days.

Been awhile since I've been on here. Did we get anything throughout the season or recently about Brandon Lee's development? Obviously, I understand he didn't play, but is that because we just had too many great guards in front of him while competing for a championship, or was he doing just ok in practice? Just wondering how much we NEED to recruit over him versus letting him play. For example, we recruited over Podz, who never played, and then he left and we had worse dudes take his place. Curious if the staff thinks he is worthy of big minutes next year.

My wife met Cole Certa in the airport as he was returning home from his Fla. Bradenton prep school. She was very impressed with him as a person. My oldest daughter was an athlete at ND so I follow their various teams and have become a passionate football fan, especially after the Marcus Freeman hire.

For those reasons, I have been following Certa's development which has been quite steady. Due to some injuries, he became a focus scorer this year and responded quite well. BU likely would be quite interested as he has become an elite shooter with positional size...for a guard. He is in no way a replacement role player for Ben as he does not have Ben's athlelticism, rebounding strength, or defensive determination. He would be a great lockher room fit, but is likely looking for more $ than BU would want to spend for a guy coming off the bench. But, he had Illini interest out of high school so who knows? If we signed all the great looking prospects mentioned on here, the roster would be bigger than the football squad. But I would not question BU if he decided to go get Cole Certa, a better fit for certain than Dix. Also likely a far better peice of the puzzle than Mingo.

Now Blackwell is an entirely different story...and I think his Dad would like to write that story.
I coached against Certa for 3 years in HS. He really didn’t care much about defense back then. He is a born scorer and can get to the line. I think he is actually a better athlete than Ben. Not sure if he is an every day guy. I think we are after some bigger fish and the price tag on Cole would be too much.

He should just admit it about the money. Nobody blamed Coleman Hawkins for cashing in his 5th year. We all knew he was unlikely to make it in NBA so getting a multimillion dollar NIL payment could be life changing. ESPN NBA draft boards had hm at 65th on top 100.

why? guy's a walking bucket. could be the POY frontrunner.

the Haggerty slander here for no practical reason has been quite weird.
It’s not like it’s out of nowhere. Losing tends to translate and he was supposed to be a POY front runner this year too

Can’t Bilic be the Humrichous replacement?

I’m really high on both freshman guards, Coleman and Murillo. A backcourt with those two and Blackwell would be great if you run offense through Mirk.

Coleman/Murillo
Blackwell
Andrej
Mirk
Tomi

Jake
Big Z
Murillo/Coleman
Bilic? Ty?

If we go after one more transfer with this theoretical roster, are we prioritizing a true PG?

Illinois was in on the ground floor for John Blackwell. It was nowhere near a surprised that he hopped in the portal.

Now that he actually entered, the money is growing exponentially with some heavy hitters getting in.

Still think Illinois will be right there.

Money isn’t a problem … We ain’t going to have $22 million or whatever Kentucky spent last year …

But we’re going to have plenty … And if Brad says hey we need a little more for a guy like Blackwell …

I’m sure there’s plenty of people who’d step up more for a guy like that …
I'm curious how the logistics work now with profit sharing being capped at $20.5M and NIL deals having to go through the clearing house. How will football and basketball get the extra $s to the roster spots now?

I forgot how much I hate this. Not saying we won’t get him. But history shows this will end up being a highest bidder situation despite some X factor intangibles that could help us. Protecting myself for the Blackwell to Michigan notification to drop.

Wow - Glynn showed up in Indy, huh? Excellent news!!!!!
Rumor has it that Blackwell wants $5M. He's not worth that, and I hope Illinois doesn't fall for it.

I hope I am wrong but why does this remind me of the Dame Sarr Saga from last year.

Only difference is that Dame doesn't have a dad who went to the University of Illinois.
