Illinois Hoops Recruiting Thread

#376

from Trotter's starting five:

F Benji Berrouet (No. 22 in 247Sports' Class of 2028): Berrouet is a monster who seems poised for a major rise up the rankings in the not-so-distant future. The 6-8 forward averaged 17 points, 13 rebounds, 4.0 blocks and 1.1 assists while showing an ability to impact the game in a ton of different ways. Berrouet's motor is outstanding, and he's just always around the ball. The burly power forward is already a gem, and the spotlight is only going to grow.

tl;dr - he's pretty good

Yeah, the names showing up to be at the table in this recruitment is going to be very blue bloodish. I don't think a Duke offer is very far away.

We're going to see how far our brand has grown here.
Is Kentucky really a threat with their recent record and a Coach that seems to rub people the wrong way?

The best line in regards to Pettigrew in Werner podcast was calling Duke a "sleeper" 🤣🤣 Like c'mon man. Duke shows any interest, they vault to the top.

Illinois best shot is if his decision waits until the spring and we see what happens to Vaaks and/or Coleman.

They still can outspend just about everybody. Get a bag and go to the NBA or transfer for another bag and then go to the NBA.

UNLESS you care about winning at a high level and developing into an even better player playing in a pro style offense that showcases guards and developing your body with one of the best S&C coaches in the country at a program that is very stable top to bottom more than you care about the top bag you can get. Then you look at places like Illinois

You never know for sure a players decision process. Pettigrew appears to be level headed from what I have seen and read. I could easily see him wait and see his best fit.
Returning players might or might not sway his decision. Illini might or might not have enough nil. I do feel Illinois will need to spend on a quality big or two.
Does he have a dream school or coach? I like our chances but retention and/or earlier commit could affect plans.

proximity could be a factor too. having family be able to relatively easily attend our home games (and more) is nothing to sniff at

His current ranking is comical. Top 50 FLOOR. That’s a DB guarantee

Jai Lucas is next up …

Kentucky, Kansas, Michigan … It’ll be a big job and it’ll be next year …
It wouldn't be shocking to see UK or UM try to nab an up-and-comer. Do you think Goff at KU has enough leash to make that kind of change without HCBS forcing their hand? While I'd applaud the boldness, the biggest unknown they've hired in the past century was Roy Williams... in an emergency.

I think our brand is as big or good as anyone's right now especially with the guard development and our recent NBA draft selections. I think this may well be the NIL package $$$$ as the deciding factor, I am not sure we can compete with the upper tier traditional bluebloods like Duke just yet!

We've had some success in the past with head to head competition against Duke for quality Illinois h.s. players. All you have to do is remember Richard Keene and Jerry Gee.

True and nothing against those players at all, but they are/were not the caliber of player that Brady is.

Staff seems pretty saavy about knowing when to put their chips in the table. Not sure how big the Duke stack is, but 🤞 it's :illinois:

The recent pipeline to the NBA is pretty consistent, so at least they don't have to sell that.
