A&M, maybe, but do you think there is enough support at A&M for the move to the B1G? Some support but not enough IMO.
No A&M supporter would want to move to the Big Ten. I guess it depends on how much their administration believe that the SEC is the best conference.

Exactly. What surprised me was how much wrestling loses at Penn State. I figured that as much of a juggernaut as wrestling is there, they would be a lot closer to break even.

But I guess that’s the basketball TV money making up the difference.

Now imagine the balance sheet for Mac programs. I would be surprised if programs drop down to fcs. In the end nil will kill off a lot of small schools and Olympic sports

When I see carve-outs for ND with the proposals, I think everyone has accepted ND is staying independent. That fight, at least for the foreseeable future, is over.

TX chose SEC. A&M, maybe, but do you think there is enough support at A&M for the move to the B1G? Some support but not enough IMO.

Adding the state of Florida is a great addition to the B1G.

Maybe it's a long term play for ND? I just think FSU is very logical. At this point, the number of actual conference schools isn't a a big factor especially when the football playoff goes to 24 teams.

There's a reason the number "19" was put in as a cap rather than stay at 18. I think it's FSU.
Who really knows why it’s 19. I’d assume so they don’t want to completely rule out conference expansion altogether. That one spot allows the Big10 to grow one and the SEC just 3 more. That will keep the Big12 and ACC from completely blowing up.

FSU would actually make more sense to the SEC with Florida. Tx tech wishes, but that would never happen. Tx Tech would try to buy Theo way not the Big10, but Kansas would be best for Big 10.

Here is a link I saw today on values of college athletic departments, the revenue, conference, and rank.

Which is stupid as hell. You program made money. A LOT of money. Get as much out of the football program as you can since it's the money maker, and just realize football is the sport that runs the rest of the department.

I know it's not the same, but I was an AD for a school in Missouri for a while. We did not have a football team. But volleyball was our money maker. The money we generated from 2 1/2 months of volleyball paid for the rest of the athletics. It worked well. We were able to add two new sports and multiple additional levels of already existing sports due to the volleyball income generation.

Then we had a new administration take over. And all they saw were the losses... not the big picture. The cut levels, removed some sports, and ultimately killed the whole athletic department.

Just stupid. So glad I got out while the gettin' out was good.

You would be surprised or wouldn't be surprised if teams dropped to FCS??

I believe only 1 school ever has dropped down, Idaho in 2018.

Since then to FBS:

Liberty - 2018
JMU - 2022
Sam Houston - 2023
Jacksonville State - 2023
Kennesaw State - 2024
Delaware - 2025
Missouri State - 2025
North Dakota State - 2026
Sacramento State - 2026

The appetite to compete at FBS is alive and well. Illinois sucked for years and I'm guessing most here wouldn't have considered changing our support.

I do know NDSU is excited for the move to the Mountain West Conference and I think they'll do very well - all things considered.

All of that was before NIL and revenue sharing. Most schools can’t compete and are losing a ton of money. This isn’t sustainable.

No, it wasn’t. NDSU, just agreed in February of this year to make the move. They knew about NIL.

And most schools have never been able to compete. You really think NDSU and their fans think they’re winning a national championship this year, any year? You think they think they’re make the playoffs? They don’t and still made the move.

Illinois football isn’t winning a NC this year either, we all know that. They aren’t even winning the B1G. So what.

Trying to get in bed with the cesspool of DC is/was a mistake. The scum in DC makes Pearl look like a choir boy.

Player NIL will find its equilibrium. The market will make sure of it. Those that figure it out will do well (Illinois), those that can’t will flounder (perhaps Rutgers ??), no different than real life business world. Enron is not around for a reason.

We’ll just have to listen to those programs that are floundering squeal and tell us how bad the current situation has become.:rolleyes:

Bielema says it’s the most exciting time ever for college football and I agree.

We are again competing for 7th place in the B1G, against Iowa, MN, WI, MSU, NE and Washington behind bigger spenders OSU, MI, PSU, USC, IU and Oregon. Just like last year. Just like next year, and the year after, etc.. It's been fun considering where we were a few years ago, but my concern is that we will all tire of the reality that no matter how well we play, we are just outgunned by a third of hte conference.

I agree. We will see what the equilibrium pont is - will IU donors continue to fund massively, for example; or will teams like us save up for a big spending run every 4 or 5 years; or will we settle into a tiered gridlock? Will the also-rans just give up? Who knows? Only time will tell.

I admire his and your optimism and wish I could share in it.

Never once in the history of college football has it been sustainable as it existed at that time, which is why we are where we are.
This kind of reminds me of a story a bartender in Las Vegas once told me. He said on any given night, someone has won a ton of money and is throwing it around like a big shot, including generous tips. The next night, that same person may have lost at the tables and won't come around... but someone else has won big and is being a big shot tossing his money around.

Feels like how the donor system works over time. A donor may get frustrated and stop donating... but there's always another donor wanting to get his or her ego stroked. Most certainly. not sustainable... but it's sustainable just long enough to continue.

I know what you’re saying , but this is the nadir

the only thing permanent in CFB throughout the ages is uncertainty of the future

think Tombstone Az or Deadwood SD in 1880

I dunno...is it?

I kinda think this version is superior to the version where the SEC dominated the entire national scene by virtue of being the most willing to cheat, and the best at PR-ing itself into the title game every year.

Realistically 9 conference games and 1 p4 non conference game is plenty. Let’s get everyone to do that and then we can talk about 11 or 12 p4 games.
Why at any point talk about 11+, though? The goal shouldn’t to be more like the NFL. These smaller programs make absolutely essential money traveling for these buy games, and we’d screw their programs more than they’re already screwed so we can play Wake Forest?

well , I do think there is going to be a splinter of the current FBS.

so there’s that influencing me
