First half as expected. Solid offense. Horrid defense. Need to learn how to tackle at halftime and we can pull this out

Look, I was fully cupped for a below B1G average defense this year.

I absolutely in no way whatsoever expected a defense that can't tackle better than some 7A high school teams, with the final play of that half just leaving their best player completely alone inside the 10 yard line.

We are talking about a hot take worst defense in the B1G right now.

even Bailey looked tentative at times, its weird

(edit: except when he almost was called for targeting)

The real positives to this game is the o line has been outstanding. Hardly any pressure all game. I’d keep this group stsrting till it doesn’t work.

The defense is what it is. It’s not going to get better. It’s simply lack of talent/athletes out there.
I've hardly noticed Martin is playing and not JC Davis. We actually get 2nd and 4's running which is a big improvement over last year

Neutralize 20 and UI wins going away.
Easy GIF

How the back 8 have no idea where #20, Nate Sheppard, is at is coaching malfeasance.

They all need to know where he's at every play. These players, and coaches, can't figure it out.

I would like to say unbelievable, but I believe it.

Hate to say it but this would never happen at Iowa.

im not dying on this hill but i don't have a problem with the scheme. players arent making plays, period. have to at least wrap up until the calvary comes.
Hard to tell, but here’s what we do know:

1. Our tackling is absolutely awful.
2. Seems like players are out of position a lot. Not sure if it’s player confusion, scheme, or some of both.
3. We’re giving up a ton of offense 6 quarters into the season. Not good.

What stinks is that the r have a stud QB, and with even a decent D, could be a great season. As it is, I think our ceiling is pretty low b/c of the D.

Men… take a breath and look around this locker room.
This isn’t just orange and blue on your shoulders — it’s every player who came before you, every fan who drove hours to be here, every kid in Illinois who believes in you because you wear the I.

Duke came in here expecting you to fold.
They expected you to doubt yourselves.
They expected you to forget who you are.

But you didn’t.
You fought every snap.
You hit every block.
You stood toe‑to‑toe with a team that thought they had this game won before it even started.

Now listen closely.

There comes a moment in every season when a team decides what it’s going to be.
Not what the rankings say.
Not what the analysts say.
What you say.

And that moment is right now.

When you walk back onto that field, I want you to remember every rep you’ve taken, every sprint you’ve run, every weight you’ve lifted, every sacrifice you’ve made to wear this jersey.
You earned this.
You belong here.
And you’re not done.

So I’m asking you — as brothers, as Illini — to finish what you started.

Go out there and play with heart.
Play with pride.
Play with the fire that brought you to Champaign in the first place.

And when Duke looks across the line and sees you coming, I want them to feel it.
I want them to know that Illinois doesn’t back down, doesn’t fade, doesn’t quit.

Men…
Go out there and win this one for the Illini.
That is solid there Chat GPT!

when did BB make a decision to eliminate tackling during the preseason because of fears of injury??? I wonder how much that decision played on what we are now seeing..

With the way the offense has been playing, this team have the potential to be special with a capable defense.

We may be worse defensively this yr than with Henry as DC. Oh well stuck with it now but, honestly, I turn the channel when Duke has the ball. Its trash

Not sure I agree with point 2

After all the injuries

I guess we could have spent less on offense and more on defense, maybe we’ll be able to increase a little more next year. Who’d have thought $21-23 million on this team or whatever we spent would get us this defense.

Somebody overhyped Scott or he's just not himself yet. He's getting beat a lot.
