In today's world, I find the 5* OAD model to have a clear ceiling. Always exciting as F because it usually entails a lot of lottery picks, stars of tomorrow, but ineffective because you're usually getting them well before they kit their potential.
It's college basketball, you're getting all these guys before they hit their potential. Every single team that made the Final Four this past tournament started or had major contributions from at least one freshman (Michigan started Nimari Burnett every game, but McKenny actually played more minutes). If you look at the All-Region teams from last year's NCAA tournament, of the 20 players selected 5 were freshmen. 3/5 Consensus First Team All-Americans were Freshmen, as were 3/5 Consensus Second Team All-Americans.

20 year old Euro freshman that played pro ball not the same as US freshmen. Last year's team had plenty of age on it.

Mirk was 19 at the start of the season. He was born 5 months before Caleb Wilson and 3 months before Mikel Brown, Jr., who I am sure you would have had no trouble categorizing as a freshmen last season. He's actually younger than Brayden Burries, who was also categorized as a freshman last season.

r the KJ/Will Riley season. It's hard to really draw any conclusions based on those. I mean these guys visiting this weekend are all top-20 recruits and each one of them has a higher 247 composite ranking than Will Riley, the highest ranked recruit we've pulled in during the time in which 247 has been doing the composite. W

2025
Kaspar FR 18 years old
Will FR reclass FR 18 years old
Morez FR18 years old
Kylan JR 19 years old
Tomas 21 years old

It was a young team playing together for the first time. Of course it did not include multiple top 10 recruits. I will take a multiple freshman Cooper Flagg, Keaton Wagler Koa Peat or Jeremy Fears

So these guys were all “ineffective” ??

(Not to mention Dybantsa who led the nation in scoring; played on an underwhelming team, yes)

What year are we talking about?

Brad's worst year was year 2 when we went 12-21. And it's true we relied a lot on freshmen that year. But it was not the last time we relied on multiple freshmen.

If multiple means more than one, then that would be last season, when we made the Final Four starting 2 freshmen in Wagler and Mirk.

My guess is you were referring to either the Matthew Mayer season (where we had freshmen contributions from the likes of Epps, Rogers, Sencire, and, for a time, Skyy) season or the KJ/Will Riley season. It's hard to really draw any conclusions based on those. I mean these guys visiting this weekend are all top-20 recruits and each one of them has a higher 247 composite ranking than Will Riley, the highest ranked recruit we've pulled in during the time in which 247 has been doing the composite. We've just never had a class like that. Even pulling two of those guys would be uncharted territory.

It's also would not a true Fab Five situation unless there is some re-classing being discussed because half these guys are from the '27 class and half are '28.

All for inserting the one OAD into a more seasoned roster. That works. Someone here was talking about a Fab 5, ala what Calipari employs.

Arkansas got throttled on the boards and defensively by anyone with a pulse.

Sampson tried the OAD 5* route and he had one of his flatter teams, and they're all gone after a year. This year he's starting two lower rated sophomores and already signed 4 kids between 35-90, that will stick.

I’m not sure I really care about class as much when it comes to Brad staying with current course or switching up.

What matters most to me (what do I know, just a basketball fan compared to a D1 lifelong Coach) is Brad continues on with the roster makeup.

Size, skill, shooting, rebounding ability.

Hmmm...normal MO for ELITE recruiting weekends...arrivals and groups... little else until 1st of the week to let the recruits speak for themselves...unless they commit over weekend!

Wonder why we didn't have Brady P in this weekend also...?
Wanted to have his weekend all about him, laser focus on keeping him in state!!

I’m no recruiting expert.

But just from a sales/business standpoint, this feels like a salesman that just learned he was about to lose a client and asked for one more chance to make a better deal before any decisions were made.

Maybe it’ll work, or maybe it’s not that at all…but it’s what it feels like.

Yeah they’re def worried. It may come down to an NIL battle. I don’t think their 1997 title is relevant.
Kinda like Bobby Night and the Hoosiers. These kids weren’t even born when he coached, yet IU fans think it matters now!

That never gets old btw.

I’m surprised how UCLA isn’t heavily in the mix here (unless I’m missing something).

They’re not listed on his OV state:

He also hasn’t visited them unofficially:

(yes, all his visits so far are concentrated on those 4 schools)
I know some people were concerned about not being listed on the OV slate for Cole Kelly:

However, he’s unofficially visited Illinois twice:

(@LvilleILL1 recently said Illinois and Purdue are two front-runners at the moment)

None of those are official visits. Both lists are referring to the same situation.

None of these are official either.
