My daughter is a freshman at Florida, so I found myself at the Swamp for the first time this weekend for UF's beatdown of #4 Ole Miss.

The lack of any concourse walkways between lower and upper rows really makes it feel like a 90k+ sea of humanity. Loved their tradition of the whole crowd singing Tom Petty's (Gainesville native) "Won't Back Down" song between the 3rd and 4th quarters. Really cool and unique.

This should be the inspiration for doing something similar with an REO Speedwagon song. Local connection and well known artist. It could end up being something big in the future too!

With genuine love and affection for the legends REO Speedwagon: they're no Tom Petty.

Metallica aren't from Blacksburg, VA. Richard Strauss never composed a waltz in Columbia, SC. Don't worry about the local stuff, do something that engages the kids.

Iā€™m old enuf to have grow up in the 1970ā€™s hearing REO playing in the dorms all the time .

but they never achieved multi generational status like some bands

a song by Dave Matthews , CSN& Y , Dylan , The Doors or some hardcore metal band fits .

you want an Illinois connection? Jim Peterik has more than a few songs with The Ides or 38 special that work

True. No connection between Michigan and Mr. Bright side I'm pretty sure. Just need to choose something and commit!

agree - the song and about 8-10 others has allowed him to never have to have a real job his entire life. hes still married to the same gal that Vehicle was written about 55 years ago

I happen to know Jim well enough that when I do run into him about once every other year or so, we say hello and chat for a minute or so . I was a close neighbor to the trumpet player in the Ides (yea, some rock bands in the 1960's-70' had horns - see Chicago in particular) and met him thru him.

Happy to report that Jim has ditched the purple hair and purple color scheme to his clothes.
But boy, that dude can write songs .

If you want an Illinois connection, could greatly expand by the playing field by including artists from Illinois generally (Survivor, Styx, etc.), with Illinois connections/affinity (Joe Walsh comes to mind), or by expanding to consider all artists who performed at Farm Aid.

Not sure what the best artist/song would be, but would be pretty cool to potentially be able to mix in old Farm Aid concert video cuts on the video board with the whole stadium rocking along.
