What is IU’s sell … big NIL $$? Don’t think IU comes close to the other two in terms of recent history of being a winning program or developing guys into NBA players.
Big money and a big role from a coach who is kind of desperate to make a splash.

I thought Devries would be a pretty decent coach, but he seems somewhat flat and quiet so far.
To be fair, he really wasn't handed a roster that was on the cusp of success. I compare him to BM @ Iowa who had an All American PG come along for the ride. Outside of him, Iowa is in the same boat.

IU has a neverending mountain of money. I suspect they'll be a problem again going forward with regards to recruiting and results.

I think that hire kinda showed how far IU basketball has fallen. DeVries was a guy who left the MVC to take a job at a 2nd tier Big 12 school, and then after one season in which he failed to make the tourney, IU hires him. May end up deing decent, idk, but not what you typically expect from a "blue blood." Also always seemed weird that in the unlimited-free-transfer-era nobody followed him from one team to the next other than his son. Bit of a red flag to me.

Interesting points. The guy did have a really good run at Drake. In some ways, at the point they hired him vs UM hiring May, not sure there was a ton of separation. May had just lost in the first round of the 8-9 game. He did take FAU into the F4, which is a coup. Some of it is about the interview process.

I'm not sure who else was on the market that year. To think if they had just acted one year sooner on May, homestate guy could have been theirs.

I mean, May not only took FAU to a FF, but he had promising players to bring with him. And he did not have an intervening stop that dulled the shine like DeVries's WVU year. And the fact that we're comparing IU to UN kinda makes the point. At least in the IU psychology, that job is supposed to be in the KU, UK, UNC, Duke tier of jobs not the UM tier of jobs.

Didn't have anything to do with being handed a roster that was on the cusp of success. Both of them had to pretty much rebuild their rosters. Devries had his pick of who to bring along like McCollum which included Wilkerson but he didn't fill out the roster with good players. McCollum made better choices to fit what his team needed.

Having Stirtz on the roster was the difference between Iowa and Indiana. Iowa was 10-10 in conference and Indiana was 9-11.

Stirtz was a bona fide NBA draft choice who just followed McCollum from Drake. There wasn't a choice to be had. He fell into Iowa's lap. Indiana was running Conner Enright out there.

If they didn't have Stirtz, that's not a tournament team and if they didn't have him in the tournament, we would have beaten them by 40. He was the only reason that game was remotely close.

If Stirtz fell in Indiana's lap, they would have been WORLDS better than IU. They had more talent than Iowa everywhere, but the PG position and there was a Grand Canyon gap between the two.

All I'm saying is let it play out. Indiana has a ton of money to play with. We're seeing the difference right now. Wabbington was choosing between Arizona(home state), Illinois(features bigs that have the green light from anywhere) and IU has nothing to latch on to but money. It sure looks like we know what won out.

Does committing or even signing an NLI mean anything anymore? Seems like after seeing the Quentin Coleman situation unfold, we can always come back and offer Wabbington more money once we have more clarity on who is returning?
Depends on how long he wants to wait.

I think the problem with Wabbington if he wants to play the 4 is that I think Mirk will end up being a 4 or even 5 year guy.

Well, he went to Indiana and they’ll have Sherrell when he arrives.

It’s micro-analyzing who we have that made guys go elsewhere… except the place they went probably houses the exact same situation as us. (plus, the expectation is that Mirkovic has a great year and gets drafted)

My guess would be its about the $$. IU happened to offer a lofty deal.

Brad knows what he’s willing to spend on players and doesn’t compromise.

It’s his greatest strength. We’ll get someone better and probably at a better overall cost too.

Related, I have no idea why IU paid sherrel all they did. No idea what DeVries calling card or play style is.

Wabbington to IU is official. Probably make more sense in that system, swinging out. Arizona losing a paint big like Krivas will probably need to hit the portal.
