Illinois 105, Cincinnati 96 (Exhibition) Postgame

Just watching the highlights it seems Q was initiating the offense a lot more than Vaaks. I was expecting Vaaks to be spamming the pnr with our bigs with Mirk out but maybe it’s Q that is going to be the initiator after Mirk- it is impressive how good of vision he has and he seems to be able to break down his man and find someone open and even hit the step back

I don’t want to put this expectation on him, but he did look an awful lot like a freshman we had last year!

LETS OVERREACT!

- DEFENSE.

But we knew this...my question is how can they address it. I didn't get to watch as much as I would have liked...but from those who saw the entirety of the game, what were the struggling with on that end?
- Outhustled?
- Out of position?
- Lack of athleticism?
- Gameplan?
Out hustled is inexcusable and will definitely be addressed in practice.

Out of position and Gameplan go together. According to Brad they didn’t even scout the game so this was bound to happen. In an in season game the top Cincy scorer would have been game planned.

If lack of athleticism is truely a problem it really isn’t fixable so to worry about it or complain about it is not very productive. Just need to score more to overcome it.

The recruiting is very specific to promote open shots and driving lanes and height at every position. It seems to have worked. If it has come at the cost of elite athleticism I’m all for it.

When this team locked in last year they could really defend. What I would like to see is playoff intensity on defense all year long as long as it doesn’t come at the cost of injuries.

My goal for the team is no major injuries or illnesses.

The time to win a championship is now.

I haven't read the replies or anything from the posters on the inside, but I guarantee you there was little scout. You aren't stopping any D1 squad without knowing !!!!, especially with our young fellas, let alone dropping 105.

Just basing this off the highlights but the thing that struck me is many times these exhibitions are discombobulated messes offensively but spacing and execution were looking pretty crisp last night despite all the freshmen minutes and the lineup roulette.

Like everyone else, was excited to see Brown's production. Easy to see how a sniper like him could be very plug n' play for this offense.

I was expecting the backcourt overhaul to cause us some early season growing pains but we're looking like we might already be ready for the moment.

Ummm…so….uhhh…this is our offense…without….our pre-season first team All American?

Hehe….Live look at the rest of the B1G…

This was the message and GIF I sent my brothers.

“Big Ten coaches realizing Illinois hung 105 on a preseason top 20 KenPom defense without a preseason AA who will be the fulcrum of the offense…….”

If we can learn to defend, we will be hard to stop. And if we can't, well... At least we'll be entertaining.
After seeing the defensive switch turn on late last season, I’m pretty confident about the defense rounding into form.

I’m not saying we’ll be top 5 defensively or anything like that, but I am confident we’ll at least be good enough defensively to complement what looks to be a potentially insanely impressive offense.

Our defense definitely got better as the year went on last year, but man, it still lost us a lot of games.

UCLA-20+ point lead

MSU-lead late in game and we couldn't get a stop.

Wisconsin- let's focus on the BTT where we lost not one, but TWO 15 point leads. The game at our place we also had a double digit lead, but let's write that off to attrition given the injuries.

That's off the top of my head. It did get better, especially in the NCAAT. Playing at that level would be ideal.

That was likely a quad one win, missing our best player, and an exhibition substitution pattern against a team that had already played an exhibition and beaten another projected tourney team.

Plenty to work on especially defensively but encouraging start.

Not that Vaaks was bad, in fact, the opposite. But minutes under 20, bench. I’m confident he’ll start, but I’m curious.
Seems that Brown has outplayed Vaaks, and from last night may be particularly better for the team if Vaaks is not needed as the main facilitator instead of Q or Mirk.

We've seen high school rankings can be meaningless very quickly.

Right now I'd be surprised if Vaaks starts.

Highlights look good. Veteran team should travel well this season.

My first impression: QC definitely has too many fast twitch muscles.
He will be giving defenders fits.

At the end of one of the highlight videos posted here on IL, it included the end-of-game congratulatory routine. Does anyone know who the Cincinnati guy (player, assistant coach?) was who the Ivisic twins and Jake (and maybe one or two others) hugged? And why. They kind of made a big deal of it, even. Former Illini, maybe? Just curious.
