Illinois Football Uniforms

I've said it once, and I'll say it again ... the Arched ILLINI helmet begs for us to rock the navy pants at home! I wasn't around for these years, but that O/B/B look just screams 1980s Illini Football to me. Courtesy of Chat GPT:

I've seen a lot of people prefer the OG arched Illini helmets, but I think a white letters helmet without the American flag could make a solid primary helmet. A modern twist on an obviously iconic uniform that would match perfectly with our modern sets. Stripes would be updated to the current stripes and a white facemask as well. Think the helmet would look great on the road as well for O/W/W

Against Michigan in '83. Warmed up in O/O/B. Came back out in O/B/B. Fans went nuts. Still get chills thinking about it.

Pardon me; I need to spend a few moments alone.

Utterly filthy. And I was never a blue pants dude in the '80s.

Michigan 1983 was O/B/B. Very grainy video but if you pull up the highlights you can obviously see it better. Those unis with the Arch Illini/Chief Headdress looked awesome.

Could we maybe incorporate some elements of this logo on our helmet? Maybe put the ‘I’ in the front of the star?

I posted this in the Maryland pregame thread, but just LOOK at how great this road combo would be...

Obviously the folks who decide what uniform we wear are aware that (A) we have white jerseys, (B) we have many cool orange helmets including Arched ILLINI and (C) we have a set of navy pants. So, it truly bewilders me that we have not once given this look a chance in our 17 road games since we got the new uniforms.

My pet hypothesis is that someone in charge (be it Brett or someone less prominent who gets to decide) has this unofficial "rule" where we can never have three different combos of the 3-stripe patterns. In other words, when looking at the helmet stripes, the shoulder stripes and the pants tripes, at least two of the three should have the exact same color combos. This would obviously include the all-orange and all-navy looks, but it would also include any looks where only the helmet and pants match (e.g., O/B/O and O/W/O) or where only the jersey and pants match (e.g., O/B/B and O/W/W). It would exclude patterns like O/B/W and O/W/B. Just a theory, as the only other explanation is that someone wouldn't like this look ... and that's impossible.

Back to the bland Block I for today.

Is there a school in the country that constantly trots out underwhelming stuff so regularly (Block I helmets, 1LL1NO1S basketball uniforms) when it has proven it has so much better options that have already been used (arched Illini in both colors, script basketball uniforms, 1989 model uniforms)? We don’t have to be Oregon-in fact, I’d very much prefer we don’t. But we keep doing bad uniform stuff when we have clearly better options just sitting there waiting to be used more.

Really wish we made the arched Illini our default helmet. Use the Giants underlined "Illinois" a few times a year with certain orange combos that look good, and throw in the script for bowls if you want.
Just anything but the block I
The arch is a unique look; everyone uses script (I like ours), and the arch isn't the old NYG underline logo (which I don't hate anymore). I wish we'd use the arch as our primary, along with the underline, and then use the block I sparingly.

Serious question - what’s the argument to use the Block I ever? Do you think it ever crosses Michigan’s mind to rotate in a Block M helmet instead of wearing their cooler one every game? 🤣

On a positive uniform note, Maryland’s helmet stripe pattern looks tiny and ridiculous, and ours looks so much better in comparison.

With that said, it was a big mistake not to make the numbers navy on our white jerseys … way too much orange and white.
