The tumbler thread reminded me of the beer thread, so I thought I would bump.

I've really been pleased with some of the beers I've found in NYC lately. Specifically pleased with the following:
-Russian Roulette by Evil Twin (either IPA or Black IPA, you don't know what you have until you open it)
-Weyerbacher Double Simcoe IPA. Very hoppy with strong citrus notes
-UFO Unfiltered Pumpkin Ale. Nice and spicy with the right amount of pumpkin

There are a lot of others, but these are my recent favorites.

I've become a fan of Southern Tier Unearthly Imperial IPA. It's brewed in western NY, so you should be able to find it in NYC.

Great call. It is a very good beer.

Speaking of non-NYC New York, one of my favorite breweries is Ithaca Beer. Their Flower Power IPA is unreal, but very hard to get. I absolutely recommend it to anyone that can get some.

I'll add what I put in Tumbler thread, and I bet you can get it in NY (I get it in CT)

Dogfish Head Ale 60 min IPA

Also used to love Brooklyn Brown Ale...don't see it much anymore

Dogfish is good. Do you like the 90 min? I actually prefer that to the 60. They also have a 75 (half 60, half 90 and in keg only) that is great as well.

No matter what though, nothing compares to 3 Floyds IMHO. Amazing brewery, awesome culture (Dark Lord Day is a blast), and unbeatable beers.

I rank DFH this way: 90 min, 120 min, 60 min.

Went to Scotland last year looking for great beers. Went into a pub, asked the bartender for their best beer. He said we have this great imported beer, slightly more expensive. I said, I'll try that.

He reached up to the top shelf of the cooler and set the bottle on the counter.

It was a Budwieser.

I've had probably 500+ different kinds of beers in my day, but there is one local brew that I look forward to every year now and might stand above them all: Four Peaks Pumpkin Porter.

Too bad for all the rest of you folks that you can't get it outside of Arizona.

I like hops, but I'm more of a malt aficionado. Their Robert the Bruce is my current go-to beer.

Wow. I've only had the 60. Looks like I've got some work to do

As far as AZ beers. Have you folks tried the Bandersnatch Milk Stout?

Also in AZ, remember a place called McFarland's around 32nd & Washington. Threw a massive party there on late 90s. I hear it's not there anymore

Where are you guys getting the 3 Floyds? Every time I go to Illinois and make it to Champaign I always look for it to no avail. My understanding is it's primarily available in the Chicago area and NW Indiana, and that's it. An acquaintance of mine out here in AZ said he had some shipped to a local liquor store but I think that was probably on the sly and not through the brewery. The Whip Inn in Austin also gets the occasional few 6 packs but never while I'm there. I am dying to try some.

When a friend of mine went to Scotland and visited with his co-workers family in Scotland, the father brought him a Bud. He had this look on his face and the father asked him what was the matter. He said I'd really love to have a Guinness. And it was all downhill from there. Not sure why they like Bud there, but apparently they do.

Had a few Domain Dupage over the weekend. A really nice beer.

Also had a rye sassion a few weeks ago that is produced locally (Cincinnati) that was especially good. Anyone have any idea what that might be?

The same reason we like stuff like Harp and Stella here. They're foreign and once they start gaining a following, it's hard to stop the snowball. When I spent some time in China a few years ago, it was near impossible to get a Guinness, Bass, Hoegarden, or anything that we might consider a "good" import, but Bud, Heineken, and St. Pauli Girl were everywhere. They even bottle their own Bud over there--it tasted worse than American Bud.

When I was young, Coors was only available in Colorado. If you passed through you had to buy a few cases to bring back to the midwest because it was "the beer." Now I just laugh, Coors never was anything special and once it went national it lost all its mystique.

That's how it is now with New Glarus. Gotta pick some up anytime I'm in your neck of the woods.

I really like some of the New Glarus brews but their most popular, Spotted Cow, is pretty ordinary (I suppose that's why it's gained the popularity?)

I just tried Hopdinger from O'so brewing in Plover WI. Very good pale ale that's worth a try.

3F is notoriously hard to get access to. They are idealists (or just playing the economics game) and limiting their production/growth over time. Living in NYC, I am only able to get it in Chicagoland. If you want the popular offerings (Alpha King, Zombiedust, Arctic Panzer Wolf, Dreadnaught, Gumballhead, etc.), you will have better luck in the "cool" neighborhoods (just my experience). Wicker Park, Bucktown, etc. all seem to have it on draft and in the convenience stores. Nothing south of I-80, and even the 'burbs are light on selection when I've looked there.

For a person in AZ, your best bet is to have a friend ship you some beer, or to really be a buddy and check a bag full whenever they come out. My family and friends hook me up every time they come to visit, and I bring a couple of cases home over the holidays.

Sorry for little to no help, but that's what I've found.

Well I will be out in SE Illinois for Thanksgiving and likely through Christmas so I have a choice to make. Last trip out I toyed with the idea of a road trip just to stock up but couldn't find a day to make it, too busy with family and stuff. Perhaps this trip I can swing it. I'll be a couple hours South of Champaign on the 57 so it will pretty much be an all day affair. Anyone know what would be the closest place/town/liquor store to carry 3 Floyds? I could continue up the 57 or head East on the 70. Does Indianapolis carry it? I haven't heard that they do. Sheesh, the things a person will do for a good beer! :tsk:

AZ Illini Fan - I'm almost certain that Friar Tuck's would have it (on 45 in Savoy). When I lived there they always at least had the Alpha King.

EDIT: They do! http://www.friartuckonline.com/beer.aspx and scroll down. Looks like they have all the 3 Floyds brews.

I was told that before but when I stopped by on the way to last years Gonzaga game they told me they had gotten some in here and there but were no longer carrying it for reasons the clerk didn't know. If they do in fact have it I'll be loading up the trunk with several cases! I guess I'll call a week in advance to see if they can do a special order. Thanks for the info! :thumb:

Aww man, I just called the Savoy store and they don't carry 3 Floyds. I got all excited over nothing. :faint: It's still only available in the Chicago area and NW Indiana. Any of you Chicago guys going to the Purdue football game? Wanna bring me some beer? :D
