I think the 2005 appearance in the NCAA final makes him a far better coach. Weber's problem was that he could not recruit and in particular could not recruit the right players for his system. That does not mean he is as good as Izzo or Coach K but he is far better than Groce.
It was something of a power struggle between Lovie Smith and Ron Rivera and Lovie forced Rivera out. That might have been the beginning of Lovie's end in Chicago. If Lovie hires an offensive or defensive guru for coordinators, hopefully he lets them do their thing.
