11/30 Games: Night 3 of ACC/BIG Challenge

Final 6 games of a tied series. ACC is a huge favorite tonight.

Approx 6 pm, Central
Purdue at Louisville, ESPN
Va Tech at Mich, ESPN2
Rutgers at Miami, ESPNU

Approx 8 pm, Central
UNC at Indiana, ESPN
OSU at UVA, ESPN2
Nebraska at Clemson, ESPNU

Yeah, Michigan is looking like the only likely B1G win. IU needs to hold serve at home vs a really good UNC team and we'd need Purdue or UNL to steal one on the road.

Does it bug anyone else that the ACC gets to play their top 14, with only BC out of the deal? I mean, what if they played all but their #1? Can you imagine the moaning and groaning? Why didn't they just drop one of their middle teams and play top 7, bottom 7. Seems very odd to me.

This thing lost all it had going for it after conference realignment.

I like to think of the 'challenge' as more of a good way of getting high major competition for all (OK most) teams in both conferences as it strengthens both the individual teams schedules and the overall schedule of the conference (if that makes sense, in more basic terms im trying to say that wins in conference play look better on a resume if all teams play higher competition). Now Mich St obviously plays enough high major competition, but for teams like us or Iowa, we really would only have a couple (if that) high major games without it, which means for teams like Mich St, if they beat us, and we have only sub 150 RPI wins, it doesnt look nearly as good as if we have a few top 100 RPI wins. Overall its good for the conference as a whole and individual teams, in terms of helping their cases for making the dance, which is the goal anyways.

I'd of course like to see every game be fair in terms of skill level and its always nice when the B1G wins more games, but in the end I hold zero stock in who won more.

I don't think you should throw us in there. As Groce has said we have as many or more set games than anyone in the country.

Not that I'm advocating backing out of the challenge or anything.

I guess I was trying to say it gives most teams in the conference another good opponent, as opposed to some team like Detroit for example. Any ACC team is better than a Detroit type team.

Yeah maybe we aren't the team that makes for a good case, it still forces us to play another tough (or at least good looking) game, which is positive.

I do think a good example is NW. I feel like they play one of the easiest non-con schedules year in and year out and when you do that it doesn't give a good read on your team. By forcing them to play an ACC you get them a better SOS and a win against them looks stronger.

And by no means am I saying playing cupcakes is bad because it is somewhat important.

The home non-conference schedule would be pretty boring without the Challenge.

Watching Boston U. vs. UCONN on ESPN3. Everyone's favorite Illini beat reporter, Taylor Rooks, is the sideline reporter for SNY. Congrats to her, she is gonna make a nice career for herself.

It's a made for TV event so you want the best teams and matchups out there. There's going to be significantly better ratings for MSU-Duke & UNC-IU than MSU or IU-BC.

Cold, stupid fouls, and Tech stepped up their game. Buzz Williams has really turned Tech around in a short amount of time. They are a team that typically fights to the end.

Loathe as I am to root for Indiana, I can make an exception against NC. Watching how Indiana plays defense, and passes the ball, it's hard not to admit that Clappy can coach.

Even though we will lose the challenge, it would take a little of the sting off if Indiana can pull out the win.

Sure, but that is not who would play BC. That would be Rutgers. No one but the alums is that watching that game no matter who Rutgers plays

I pretty much feel the same way about Carolina as I do the Washington Redskins (living here in Maryland)...I root for them to lose every game they play, regardless of the competition. Of course, that might be tested if they play Pearl and Auburn.
