#ratings - good for marketing future matchups. That is also the cynic in me but honestly feel like there is some truth there. :)

I mean, it’s objectively good for ratings to have a ranked Illini team. Sole big state school in a huge state, covered in two major markets, have one of the biggest alumni bases in the nation and played in the top two highest rated (and 3 of the top 4, IIRC) games of last season.

Yea....we will improve as the season goes along and we get people healthy....question is....how much will Arizona improve ??
That's the astonishing thing.... AZ are mostly freshman. Their ceiling is very, very high. Impressive to beat our experienced veterans AND in our house in their first true hostile environment.

They’re freshmen in name only because of Covid. I believe everyone that saw action has played at least one year of college ball. So they are indeed young, but freshmen in the sense that Hawk is a freshman and not that Goode is a freshman.

There was no one who started for AZ against us that wasn't on the team last season. The 3 reserves they used were all transfers, but played D-1 basketball last season.

Things can change a lot faster than that if even half of the hacks at Kofi get called as fouls and he makes his FTs. There seems to be an awful large element of chance in how any given game gets called.
What has shown to be very true, is that Kofi's low, aggressive "lean (with authority)" into the chest of the defender, is ALSO not being called.
It took him an entire half of that Az game to say "ok, if you're not going to call anything on the guys hacking me, I'm going to MAKE you call an offensive foul on me." And they didn't... and he got all of his points and established himself, ONLY after doing so.

So, if we were to play Az again... or when we play in the B1G... I think he learns this, and eliminates the silent halves, like he had the other night.

We likely won't shoot as well as we did the other night (although I do anticipate we can shoot close to that on many nights), BUT a healthy and mentally sound Curbello, who realizes that his need to prove he can shoot is not aligned with our need to give ourselves the best chance of winning (b/c while he may be improved, he's not as good as at least 5 other 3pt shooters on this team), does improve us.

Here's to hoping that my guesses are true... b/c if so, then we are a Top 8 team, parading currently in Top 30 clothing.

The loss at Marquette (especially the way it played out over the last few minutes) and the beat down by Cincy made the Arizona loss just another signal that we are an inconsistent team not yet capable of finishing in big games. Not sure I agree with that, but it will take a higher level of consistency to break into the Top 25 now. We just need to keep racking up the wins and, whatever we do, DON'T lost to Missouri :).

If we want to be ranked you have to beat a rank team. We don’t have a truly impressive win yet. The only thing that bothers me in the rankings is Villanova. They have 3 loses to good teams but they are not a top 25 team based on their resume
Didn't see the score and realize how badly Baylor had brutalized them. Then turned on the replay last night and they had 22 points with 10:30 left in the game when I turned it on. Baylor plays excellent defense, but no way Illinois gets held to 22 points in 30 minutes of play against them.

Is it an offensive foul if the defender is in the restricted zone when Kofi bangs into them to get space? That is legal correct? I realize that Kofi does this even when the defender is not in the restricted area.

That rule is super confusing. I think the restricted area for secondary defenders. So if Kofi is being guarded then someone joins on a double team that person is a secondary defender. I think the arc is irrelevant for primary defenders. The one we are most familiar with is the charge vs. block call. The defender is a secondary defender because the original defender has been been beaten by the offensive player, and that defender must be outside the arch to get a charge.

That’s a very interesting question.

I think I agree with Bucktown on this one. It would be pretty asinine to say a man can’t be fouled simply Bc he is standing inside the arc.

I’m not 100% certain Bucktown covered it specifically, but it’s as rational of an explanation as could be offered without a rule book dive.

One thing is for sure… he is going to have to do a lot more of it, until it starts getting called… and then BU is then going to have to lose his mind on a zebra or two, to reset that apple cart. They can’t have both. Right now they’ve chosen neither.

Play the hand you’re dealt until the dealer changes the game.

You could review the Cincinnati tape. They shut us down.

I agree. However Baylor is.
Absolutely. I am just saying that I am not sure how much you could learn from watching the Cincinnati game about shutting us down. All you'd learn is "Illinois sometimes just inexplicably starts playing like a high school team."

This is one of the games I was referring to as playing the up-tempo/hap hazard style with multiple TO's...we forced things too much....something about a square peg in a round hole

We shut ourselves down in that game. Cincinnati is not a good team.
Yes. We got out to a 23-8 lead and Cincy decided to double/triple Kofi. I think he was just a little too buzzed up in his first game back and tried to do too much and didn’t pass out. The 2-3 guys neutralized Kofi and we couldn’t get any good shots otherwise. Think we are a different team now. Hoping Belo sees that and doesn’t try to do too much when he comes back.

If we get frosh level Belo back and clean up a few things defensively I still think we can win the BIG.

I remember yelling at the tv that night - put in Plummer. He played 10 minutes and 3 shots.

If he played more the score might have been closer but still a loss
