As good a time as any to start the new thread. Congrats to the Pens for winning the hardest title in team sports. No way will they repeat.

We have some limited information about the possible upcoming expansion draft.

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-p...ft--including-waiving-no-moves-233018900.html

It seems there is a deadline of June 22nd to decide on league expansion.
Don't look for much off season roster changing to occur prior to this being decided.

Total longshot that Vegas will ice a team in 16-17. Expansion draft will take place in summer of 17.

WRT the Blackhawks, they'll probably lose TVR and another player.

They can have their pick from Hossa, Bickell, Svedburg, and Desjardins. :D

I know this is completely in jest, but it bugs me to no end that some delusional fans think the Blackhawks are going to assuage, if not solve, their perpetual cap problem via the Expansion Draft.

Thank you for picking up on my poor attempt at humor. :thumb:

I saw a piece on NHL.com last week that the salary cap might actually go down for this season.

Here are the rules for the expansion draft:

James Mirtle
@mirtle
ICYMI The rules for the NHL's 2017 expansion draft leaked out over the weekend
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sport...ticle30400443/

Las Vegas will be required to draft one player from every existing team, including at minimum at each position: three goalies, nine defencemen and 14 forwards.

Some of the other parameters for an expansion team that were recently released to teams include:

Teams cannot reacquire players they trade after Jan. 1, 2017 prior to Jan. 1, 2018. This is to prevent teams from entering arrangements to “hide” players from the expansion draft. There will likely be a lot more guidelines as part of this rule.

Teams have to expose at least two forwards and one defenceman who have played either 40 games in the previous season (2016-17) or 70 games in the previous two seasons (2015-17). Teams can only lose a max of one player.

The expansion team must select players that have a total value of between 60 and100 per cent of the 2016-17 salary cap.

The expansion team can’t buy out anyone it picks in the expansion draft until the following off-season (2018).

he expansion team will be given the same draft lottery odds as the team that finishes third last in the league and cannot pick later than sixth in the 2017 NHL entry draft. It’s possible the expansion team could end up with the first overall pick, if it wins the lottery.

Teams must protect players that have no-movement clauses active in the 2017-18 season. No-movement clauses active in 2016-17 will have no impact. There will likely be exceptions made for players with no-movement clauses who are out with career-ending injuries (i.e. Ryane Clowe and Nathan Horton). Teams are not expected to be forced to protect those contracts.

These guidelines are in addition to previously determined rules, the biggest of which was that all players with two years or less of pro hockey experience are exempted from the draft.

Teams will have a choice between protecting seven forwards, three defencemen and one goaltender (11 players) or eight skaters and one goaltender (nine players). The second option allows for teams to protect four defencemen but forces them to expose three more forwards in order to do so.

Hawks are going to lose Pokka. Frigging sucks.

I really hope not.
From my link....
"* There is an “experience criteria” for the draft. “A minimum of two forwards and one defenseman must be exposed who have played 40 games the previous season, or a total of 70 over the previous two,” writes Johnston. In addition, those players must be under contract for the team’s first season."

Unless the games played can be AFL games?

Hawks can only protect Keith, Hammer & Seabrook. Pokka will be expansion draft eligible (grrrrrrr!). Knowing this, I wouldn't be surprised if Stan moves him. Then, it probably would be TVR, which is much more palatable. If there is a silver lining to this, it's that Gustav Forsling will be ready in 18-19. And he has the most upside of all the Hawks' D prospects.

Man, that three d-man limit really sticks it to us. Maybe other teams have more attractive targets?

I thought the league was going to expand with two teams. Obviously Las Vegas will be in the Western Conference but that makes 15 teams in the West and 16 in the East, doesn't that wreak havoc on scheduling?

The Quebec "franchise" hasn't met the hurdles yet. Vegas has, save the $500 million fee. Can't make them wait for Quebec.

TT has a lot of upside, so this could really hurt. The flip side is that with how slow the cap is rising, they'd probably have to trade him anyway (RFA in a year). And while the potential is obvious, the kid isn't close to there yet. Plus, losing Bickell means we keep Shaw and have some breathing room (#4D, Brian Campbell?).

Look for the Hawks to lock up Panarin this summer (8 years, 7M AAV?).

Bad trade, IMO, unless they do something with that freed up money to make the team better because by trading TT, they made it worse.

They can resign Shaw now. Had this not happened, he was gone this summer. Also gives them more leeway in resigning Panarin. There was no way all 3 were going to be able to stay. Plus, they got 2 draft picks.

5 million in cap space, a 2nd round pick and a third round pick or you get to keep Teuvo? I don't see how this anything but a great move for the Hawks. Teuvo is very replaceable.

Last season's TT? Yes. But he's improving. The Q is how much? The ceiling is very high. That's what makes this trade difficult.

Stan better not give Shaw a Bickell-like contract. Seabrook's new contract is cause for concern (not the AAV, the term). Seabrook needs to have a bounce back season.

Also, if Schmaltz was waiting for a green light, he has it. Definitely hope he signs. He'll slot in the third line immediately.

That's debatable. He is very soft, doesn't do the "dirty work" that Q likes and he disappeared quite a bit at the end of the season / playoffs.

He faded, for sure. That said, if he was "very soft," why did Q have him PK-ing? TT has excellent positional awareness, outstanding for a 21 yo. He's lacking strength and he knows it's holding him back. It will be interesting to see what he becomes. Interesting and very frustrating, IMO.

His softness is predominantly on the offensive side, where he is most needed. He doesn't go into corners and shies away from hits. Plus, he is not a center and did not mesh well with either of the top 2 lines. This all added up to him being expendable.
