2016 Coaching Carousel

That is your opinion. That doesn't mean it is others. He was head of basketball operations for a National champ. He was also Billy D's assistant for four elite 8 appearances while there.

And now he has taken his first team to the dance in his first year.

McCall inherited a pretty good team. He helped get it to the dance, but it's too early to say he had a big effect on the team getting to that point.

Yup, McCall just has to beat IU, Kentucky and NC and they will be in the Elite 8. That should get some people's attention, OTOH, as a 12 seed they just might loose to IU in the first round.

Heard an interview of Brad Underwood here in Kansas City today. Really, really liked him!!

He'll probably jump to a bigger job after this season so may not be available next year if (and I hope we don't) we need a coach after next season.

Huggins style of play with a ton of success at Stephen F. Austin.

Only downside is that, surprisingly, he's a K-Stater and K-State is supposedly so much his dream job he would jump for K-State if the job opened no matter where he was at the time, even if it was a good P5 program.

Like I said, hopefully Illinois isn't mentioned in this thread for many years!

If ever Groce gets fired one name I'd like to see mentioned is Scott Nagy. Puts a good team on the floor every year . Of course it won't happen.

Brad Underwood looking good so far tonight. His name is in every coaching search and he's currently at $400k per year. $1-2M would be a huge upgrade, but he wants the K-State job

I'd prefer Chris Mack, though I don't see him leaving his alma mater for us anytime soon.

Ahem....

Brad Underwood. Just smoked Huggins and WVU and is making $400k per year. Unless he's waiting for his alma mate K-State, everybody wants him.

Open up the wallet if we can't get Bryce Drew and the like, me says.

Maybe we can hire Underwood, and become the "House of Guards."

I know. I'm one of the few who still has faith in keeping Groce (though that faith is fleeting as of late).

Just a thought. It would be nice to have a potential HR hire who wouldn't break the bank!

But I'm willing for JFW to break the bank!

Regardless, Go Illini!!

BTW... I liked your reference

Honestly at least from a buzz stand point I don't see a homerun hire like a Shake or Stevens in previous years.

I'm a Greg Marshall fan, but he has been all Mark Few like and has not entertained leaving Wichita in the past. Interesting search

I have a new favorite coach; Ben Jacobson from Northern Iowa who has taken his team to the round of 32 the last two years. He obviously can coach and recruit student athletes to come to city not in the limelight and I'd venture to guess he hasn't had four players arrested in the last eight months. Don't you wonder how State Farm likes having their name associated with such a program? Or if you were a recruit's parents; do you want your son going to a school with this kind of culture? Fire Groce now, and let's move on.

I hope Whitman is actively recruiting a new head coach. I like the idea of having a new coach lined up before letting one go.

As a mVC fan, I think Gregg Marshall would be a home run. While Jacobsen is a great coach, I don't think he is what you want. Too much dependence on the 3. He hasn't been a great recruiter (He is a good judge of talent).

I think Underwood or Marshall would be worth it, but I am not sure Jacobsen would be much of a step up.

Isn't Marshall Koch-brother financed? Not sure we would win in a bidding war, unless he wants to move up to a higher caliber conference. He's already making $3.3 million/ year...

Yup, Charles Koch has been a big time supporter of that program. The arena is now named after him. $3.3 million is an insane amount of money to pay an MVC coach.

Here's guessing that Marshall is Kentucky's replacement for Cal when someone finally convinces him to head back to the NBA.

I have family in Wichita and my Father-in-Law - while not an 'insider' - stays up on the sports scene, including WSU basketball and baseball. He's heard conversations around Marshall being really, really happy in Wichita and his wife doesn't want to leave. I believe he has kids that want to finish school there? Though I'm not sure their ages.

That being said, there are many who assume that with how much he will lose talent-wise after this season, he might jump ship because it will be a couple of down-years and his stock is very high if he was able to make any run this year after having so many health set-backs earlier in the season that resulted in unusual losses.

I still think it would come down to a bidding war, regardless of who goes after him. I honestly don't know if he has the personality to coach a high-major - blue blood program. Very off-putting with the media and overly stubborn/arrogant, even compared to other good coaches.

Why not pull from a blue blood like Duke or Kentucky. You know they have ties to Chicago because they pull players from the area every year.

Jeff Capel Duke
Kenny Payne Kentucky
Norm Roberts Kansas
Kenny Johnson Louisville
Hubert Davis North Carolina

I like the norm Roberts idea. Bill self tree. I would take any bill self influence on our program we could get right now. Good coach, nice guy, good tree, probably not too expensive and has a well known name. And he is black which would shut the boosters up

Norm Roberts was 81-101 at St. Johns. He should not be in the top 100 candidates for us. Also, the boosters aren't the ones who care what skin color the coach has.

Jeff Capel was 96-70 at Oklahoma. That's a worse record than Groce has at Illinois, a similar caliber program. Again, should not be considered.

Kenny Johnson is way too inexperienced for a job like Illinois. He was coaching AAU 16s just 5 years ago. Let him prove himself elsewhere.

Hubert Davis only has 4 years as an assistant under his belt. Again, should not be in consideration.

Kenny Payne is actually a good coaching prospect, but we'd still probably have to be turned down by about 10-15 guys to get there.
