2016 Coaching Carousel

Who cares? He's a hell of a coach. He'd kill it just like he is at Wichita St.

He is a good coach. But there are plenty of coaches who had trouble making the transition from MM to HM. I think Marshall will be very good at a blue blood, where he can draw talent helped by the school's reputation, but at a school like Illinois he'd struggle to get the talent. JMO.

He seems to recognize talent others overlook. He would do just fine here I'd bet.Knows what defense is all about.

Put me in the group that believes Illinois is not the right fit for Marshall. I think we would be okay with him, I don't think he would be okay with Illinois and I don't think our school is the 100% best landing spot for him. I am incredibly skeptical he would make a change for anything less than the 100% best scenario... Illinois is not the certainty Greg Marshall is looking for.

To me Illinois has never struggled to get raw talent in here. It has always been a question of the right pieces for whatever system you run.

If you just go by stars and offer lists Illinois has never struggled to get high end talent. The last 2 coaches have simply struggled to get a decent point guard after McCamey.

Illinois has been overrun with top 100 recruits for most of my years which started with Henson. (Probation years excluded)

It is really not that hard to recruit to Illinois in Basketball. The State is generally loaded. Coaching that talent however is another issue

Illinois has gotten 1 McD AA since Dee Brown in 2002. That is a huge drought. Unfortunately, even that one had well documented issues before he stepped on campus and did not work out. We have failed to have talent at 2 of the 5 positions on the flour in multiple years. Not a single top-100 player in PG and C in years. Groce has his deficiencies as a coach, but even next year with Lucas, we still have major recruiting gaps and people overestimate the talent currently on this team.

Illinois (as in the state of Illinois) provides fertile recruiting grounds, but just because we are the University of Illinois does not mean that top state players will just end up here. The top Illinois players are national recruits, and unless the current and future coach are good recruiters and can successfully close the deal (including Groce), consistently competing in the B1G against some of the best coaches and teams will simply not happen.

So simple.
So true.

Abrams and Egwu were both top 100 players.

The three players in question are not under arrest or charged with any crime at this time. Can't believe the coach resigned without waiting for all the facts.

maybe he already knows the facts and isn't waiting for the fallout.

I don't think the current team is particularly talented, and my point was we generally have more talent on paper than say a Purdue ,m Michigan or Wisconsin but are substantially behind them as programs.

I don't think you need to land the top 1 or 2 in Illinois to be a successful program if the coaching is good. I don't feel like the coaching has been particularly good since Self left.

Am I missing something about SLU being a good job?

Not really, but I think the shine on them was with a new arena, big things could happen there. Nice little arena no doubt, but it alone won't bring in the recruits necessary for bigger and better things. Seems to me that all of the Lou's top players always mention SLU but never go there.
