Highly doubt he takes the SLU. If he did though I imagine there'd be a massive short term buyout in place. SLU isn't stupid. They know he'd be looked at for better jobs than there.

Soooooo.....if he's considering SLU he would take the Illinois job wouldn't he? Paging Josh...

You must think the Horizon league is better than the Mid American? Otherwise, the overall makeup of Drew's 5 years with Valpo and Groce's 4 years with Ohio seem pretty even. Drew has a better conference record and overall record, but Groce did better in the post season.

I just don't see much difference at all. I think if you kick Groce to the curb you need something that is better. Not sure Drew is.

Drew has a MUCH better conference record and has dominated the Horizon. I'd put much more stock into that then getting hot a couple times in the tournament.

Bryce Drew - 64-19 in conference, won the Horizon outright 4 out of 5 years.
John Groce - 34-30 in conference, highest finish was third in the MAC East.

There was a post about this in another thread, but Drews track record blew out what Groce did at Ohio. I'll see if I can find it.

Edit here:

[That said, no would can reasonably say Groce's mid-major resume was better than Drews.

Drew is 115-46, good for a .701 winning percentage. .772 winning percentage in conference.

John Groce 's winning percentage was a full 100 points lower (!!!) At 85-56. His conference winning percentage was a bad .531.

Groce never finished higher than 3rd in the MAC East division. Bryce Drew is about to win his 4th conference title in 5 years.

John Groce over a program that had won 20 games the year before him. 39 total the previous two. Drew took over a program from his father that had won 23, and 38 total the two years prior.

John Groce won 3 tournament games. Drew hasn't won any yet, but is about to be in his 3rd in 5 years. Impressive none the less.

Drew's Valpo teams have had an average kenpom rating of 91, including a terrific 26 this year. The 4 years prior to Drew getting there, valpo averaged a 157 rating. Groce's Ohio teams were averaged 115. This rating is actually worse than Ohio had the 4 years prior to Groce getting there (107). Ouch.

So yeah, Drews resume is on a whole other level compared to when we recruited Groce.

He's just one guy though. I was really just using him an example.

Some slight outdated/misinformation in there as Drew didn't make the tournament this year, but I do think it shows Drews mid-major resume is stronger than when when we hire Groce.

You also have to keep in mind that Groce has been accepted at Simeon and made headway into Chicago recruiting. At least the possibility of huge future dividends exists now, which we haven't had in quite a while. That would all have to start over with Drew and how well would yet another white head coach be able to do that?

A lot of good those Simeon kids have done...recently...unfortunately...

BREAKING: Just found out #Pitt offered Sean Miller the head coaching job. Miller is in town now. No deal yet.

Arizona to Pitt?!?!? I get the whole alma mater thing, but Pitt over Arizona!!! Just don't see it happening. Maybe if Miller was in the twilight of his career I could understand the move, but not now.

So much of the argument to retain Groce is based on hypothetical recruits.

That I think is a problem. And if I put a tinfoil hat on for a second, I think a lot of the "good news" regarding potential recruits is put out by the Groce camp itself.

As for Miller, he turned down Pitt.

per Miller's twitter "I have no interest in becoming the next head coach at Pitt."

agreed. But, his tournament record is not very good. Even in the conference tournament again like this year.

I think the format of the Horizon tournament with the double byes hurts the top 2 seeds.

He is 0-2 in the NCAA tournament as a 13 and 14 seed, not really concerned too greatly with that. If he was 0-9 it would be a red flag, but 2 games is not a large enough sample to derive anything meaningful from it.

I am skeptical of Drew, but comparing Groce's Ohio record to his is laughable. It's not even close.

is it laughable that Groce got to the NCAA 50% of the time while Drew got there 40% and that Groce was the only one to get past the second round? Heck, Drew has never won an NCAA tournament game. The only reason he got to the second round was because the committee named the first four the "first round". Drew gets a lot of weight from a schedule that has a weak Horizon since Butler left in 2012.

Actually Groce has got to the tournament 38% of the time while Drew has made it 40%.
