2016 Coaching Carousel

The program was already well established despite Homer Drew's last few years after stepping down for a year. It wasn't a mess, and I agree Ohio wasn't a mess either. Groce wasn't just hired for his record though.

I've stopped with the Groce and Bryce comparison mostly because it's pointless. I wouldn't mind taking a look at him but I don't think it would be the best idea to take another chance on a low-mid major coach. Whitman should be able to find better quality candidates if he decides to let Groce go. Bryce Drew shouldn't be any respectable high major's number 1 candidate. At least not at this point in his career.

His brother with a far less impressive track record(at the time) turned around a disaster at Baylor. I'm all on board for A Miller or Marshall but Drew should be on the shortlist. And I don't know about you but part of the reason I like Drew is because I've made a point of watching all their games and I love how they play. I believe they are on ESPN or ESPN2 against St Mary's tonight.

I'm not saying that Bryce would be worse..but I'm not sold he could do better at this point in his career. Why is it so terrible to suggest that we could find better candidates? This Bryce Drew infatuation is unreal.

Because Bryce is going to bring Roger and then hire Dee, Kendall Gill and Nick Smith and then we will never lose another game!!

Sounds just like our coaching situation...guess who it is.

His program remains something of an inkblot test. Defenders will point to this year’s roster turnover, or [player]'s injury, or all the close losses. Critics will point out [coach name] is in charge of the roster turnover, that injuries are part of sports, and that close losses are still, you know, losses.

Here is what’s true: [school] is behind schedule in [coach]’s fourth year, he should and will coach a fifth, and it better be a significant improvement or there might not be a sixth.

Gregg Marshall

I would be surprised if Gregg Marshall left Wichita St. for Illinois. But with Josh Whitman at the helm, I wouldn't be shocked!

Archie Miller:

If Whitman and donors/sponsors decide that it is time to move on from Groce, then Archie Miller would be at the top of the list I would think.

Notice how Dayton made a nice bump in his third season and has improved on that in both years since. Trending in the right direction. I would be thrilled with Archie Miller as coach.

Anyone who knows our fanbase should be able to deduce what's going on here.

Valpo has beaten Mike Davis'Texas Southern team, Florida St, and St Mary's in the NIT.

They're headed to MSG.

I love Bryce Drew and I fully expect the Rev to stay behind for the head job at Valpo, if it came to that. If he came that'd be a huge bonus.

Also I don't think anyone said it's terrible to suggest better candidates than Drew. It's just terrible to suggest Groce was better than him in the mid-major level.

Personally, I'd take Archie Miller over Marshall and Drew. But I do not think it is happening, I still believe the most likely scenario is that Groce survives 2016.

Re: Bryce Drew and Archie Miller

Can anyone name any other set of brothers who were both major college coaches? I'm blanking.

I guess the Bowden kids in football. The Ryan's, the Van Gundy's, the Harbaugh's, the Shula's.

Soon to be Bobby and Danny Hurley it seems like.

But have two brothers both been major conference head basketball coaches yet?

Add Bob Stoops (Oklahoma) and Mark Stoops (Kentucky) in football but I do not think it has happened in basketball.

His assistant, not him, as I understand it - right? School has said he didn't do anything wrong.

Would we fire a coach in part due to player conduct and then hire a coach who has had an issue with assistant conduct? Unlikely.

Doesnt quite fit but Sean Sutton at Oklahoma State and Scott the longtime coach at Oral Roberts who has made the tournament a few times.
