2017-18 Illini Tennis

Anybody following Vukic in Sydney? He qualified into the main draw of an ATP 250 event by beating Lajovic (ranked 75 in the world) and Berankis (ranked 138 in the world). His first round match is against Feliciano Lopez (36 in the world). Pretty impressive stuff from Vuki

Yikes! We want him to do well, but not too well, yet, or he won't come back for his last season at Illinois. :coffee:

In the long term, it will be great if Vukic has a successful pro career, because that should help Dancer with recruiting. Between Tiley, Anderson and Vukic, Illinois should be the go-to destination for Australian and South African college players.

Well, this would be a nice Aussie to start with (Popyrin):

Have you heard anything? That would be amazing! He has an ITF ranking of #3 and a UTR of 15. He is also a French Open Junior champion.

He kind of seems like someone who would skip college and go pro right away.

No, heard nothing. Just wishful thinking. Maybe Tiley can put a bug in his ear. Tiley is a big education guy.

What's going on at Georgia Tech?

Vukic didn't play. Hiltzik didn't play. Gomes didn't play. Kovacevic didn't play. Khlif only played one doubles match, nothing else. Of course, we got slaughtered by both Georgia and Columbia.

I'm assuming Vukic didn't need the tune up after playing some quality tennis in Australia. Kova was trying to qualify for a futures event in FL. Not sure where Hiltzik or Gomes were. It seems like Gomes hasn't played anything competitive since last season. Khlif only playing one doubles match seemed strange considering that the other schools had plenty of players for him to play against in singles. Zeke had a solid weekend and Brown showed some promise.

I wouldn't call it a slaughter scrolling through the results. Brown and Clark played fairly well and we won a couple of doubles matches.

Columbia is ranked 23rd to our 16th and they won five of five singles. We split doubles one and one.

The Women's team open up at home this Sunday, really looking forward to seeing the 4 freshman. On paper anyway their best class if not in history, at least recent history. Illinois W. Tennis has been good for several years, but hasn't been able to take that next step. Hopefully this will be the start of making the NCAA's, it's been awhile.

Don't follow. Is this because we've had a coaching turnover? Local gals mostly?

Is Ines healthy? Why no recruits for next year?

Thanks ilphotog for the response. It's good to hear we are having some success getting things on the right track in this sport. I hope that the team does well. I honestly do not follow many of the non-revenue sports much, but I do get drawn in when I hear they are doing well. I guess this is fairly common though. The past few years I've enjoyed following our Mens baseball, Womens volleyball, Wrestling, and a few of the other sports. I've followed the mens golf team for some years now, they've been consistently good. I'm glad you and others take the time to keep us 'fringe' fans updated. I appreciate it very much. :thumb:

I'll know more Sunday, there may be 1 recruit for next year, one of this year's freshman is paying her own way, and will go on scholarship next year, leaving only 1 left for next year.

Didn't know that. I recall that Duong signed late (I thought she had committed to another school originally). Is she the walk on?
