2017 Basketball Transfer Thread

I agree with what you are saying, with the caveat that, of the three, Moore helps us the least.

You can't play Lucas, Frazier and Moore at the same time without being abused defensively. They are way too small.

That's giving some pause in regards to Moore. It's a complicated situation, as his recruitment could have both positive and negative implications to other targets, plus it involves Irvin.

You are completely overthinking this.

We are so used to not having enough guards people are getting terrified by the prospect of having enough guards.

Reference Moore to Mizzou possibility...this achieves his goal of 'closer to home' and would expect he has a stronger relationship with Martin than anyone else in the running.

I'm not over thinking this. If I have to decide today, I'm taking Moore.

If I agreed with your point that any 3 could play together, I wouldn't have any reservations.

Couldn't agree more. The best Illinois basketball team ever started two point guards and a shooting guard. Seemed to work pretty well then.

Best team ever? Perhaps. 89 Flyin' Illini was right there. But we are splitting hairs there. The 89 team started a PG, a SG and 3 SFs that all looked like SFs.

You can vanquish one - and only one - message board hobby horse. Do you choose:

- treating recruiting as if you were drafting a fantasy team

- evaluating coaches as if they were constructed via attribute points in a video game ("this guy's a 90 recruiting? whoa, only 10 left for in-game, bummer")

Was Moore being recruited by Kentucky and Michigan State out of high school? I don't think he was....so I'll take Smith. He is already more physically developed than Moore even after a year of college.

Sorry Frank. Let me correct myself. The Illini team with the most wins in school history, most consecutive wins in school history, regular season and big ten tournament champs, #1 in AP Polls and #1 seed in NCAA Tournament, NCAA runner ups to a UNC team filled with non-student athletes, and SI voted best team to never win a title.

My bad. I should be more specific next time....

It's not an either or. Neither are a given.

If Moore wants to commit today, and Smith is a 40% chance, you have to take Moore and hope you still have a chance to get Smith.

Clearly Smith is the better choice...immediately available, more need for big guard.

To me this is what makes Smith the obvious choice, if it is a choice. To further confound the issue Moore was a Fire guy right? So you've got Irvins involved and you really want Ayo, but with Moore sitting a year and playing in 2018 maybe our backcourt looks a bit clogged at that time... if Moore does want to come here you take pie when its passing but if you think Smith is on the fence then it requires some finesse.

Exactly. That's why I send it's complicated in my original post.

This is why BU gets the big bucks I suppose. I hope he doesn't Groce this up a la Evans/Brunson and end up with no pie. (I know 5 people will now contend that that isn't what actually happened it was the weather or something...)

I know the irony has been pointed out already, but I'm just shaking my head at the debate here. We've gone from being the Gobi Desert of PG's to arguing which one we want more due to a surfeit. If they want to be Illini, let them. Underwood & Staff will take care of getting us a big or two.

I vote Door #1. While both are detrimental the recruiting-as-a-fantasy-team scenario REALLY leads to unreal expectations which generates a huge let down. BTW, I like how you phrased each hobby horse.

And I agree totally that UI will be a far more attractive destination when they W-I-N!

I'd rather have guys 6'2" or 6'3" playing on the wing than guys 6'6" or 6'7" trying to be a lead guard. Having too many ball handlers isn't a thing.

+1. I don't understand the discussion about not taking Moore because of Smith. Take both.

Besides, talking like we're going to land Moore, Smith, and Ayo is ignoring our rich history of getting snubbed. It isn't going to happen.

Obviously. But the assumption is that flirting overtly with Moore may impact Smith's decision.

Of the five guys I mentioned previously (Lucas, Frazier, Moore, Smith, Dosunmu), Moore and Smith are the two most dissimilar from each other and who would most obviously compliment each other in the same lineup.
