I would be fine with keeping Groce if he made staff changes . He has the top class in the conference, so his recruiting is strong with no success to show recruits. I think an Xs and Os guy could help and I would be fine with that. I really believe the problems of no point guard have now been fixed and we are on our way. Tate and Abrams even though I like them both have just not given us anything this year and JCL has had a rough year shooting, only the last 6 or 7 games with the emergence of Lucas have we had any guard play at all and that's why we are 5-9. I do think he will probably be let go . Quality guy

Staff changes like if he hired Kevin Keatts to do all of the coaching, and he just handled recruits? I can get on board with that...

This guy will not be the next Illinois coach.

So you just said Whitman keeps his circle tight and there will likely be no early leaks....but then you give us some insider info?

There is a zero percent chance Groce is back. Those of influence around the program have made that clear. As an AD, you have to listen. I have a good feeling our next coach will be someone nobody is mentioning. He will have past NBA experience and a reputation as a stand up guy.

But are his x's and o's bad or does he not have the right players to execute it properly? I personally see a completely different set of players coming in next year than what has been recruited so far. And add Lucas and Kipper to that list of different players.

If it's players not fitting the system then that is his fault. He has been here for 4 years. With that being said, I somewhat agree with you that the players coming in are different and seem to fit his system better.

It's time to start hoping these players fit the next system, the gro(ce)ss era of Illini basketball is coming to its end soon.

Based on what Ward and Jkat are saying, here are a few guesses: Mike Brown, Rod Strickland, Anthony Grant, Tony Bennett, Lord Jeff Van Gundy, Phil Jackson, Julius Erving, Dan Majerle, Tim Duncan, Luc Longley.

This is not a "stand up" guy by any means.

Maybe Billy Donovan with Anthony Grant, Mo Cheeks, and Monty Williams as assistants?!

Lon has past NBA experience and is a stand up guy. ;)

I know it wont be him, though (though he did really enjoy himself some Timpone's pizza).

Would love for it to be Billy D. I'm a bit less enamored with "The Mayor" as some are.

This is more of an aside than a legit name, but I'm surprised Mark Jackson isn't coaching somewhere. Perhaps the "reputation" issue? Not that he doesn't have a great gig.

When Damonte was being recruited, he met with both Whitman and Groce if I remember correctly. The thought back then was that Whitman was giving Groce a vote of confidence so the recruits would know he would coach them on Day 1.

I think things have changed in the sense that negatives regarding Groce and staff had been confirmed this year. If Whitman gave his word, the only way I see Groce staying if Whitman gets to hire two big named and experienced coaches to introduce a scheme (defense, offense), player/skill development, and recruiting.

Too much re-work IMHO so I think he is gone, with possibly Walker (rightfully) being retained.
