I want Groce gone but I want more than a minor upgrade. If JW can't find a home run hire keeping Groce one more year has one positive. A better roster for an incoming coach. We have six players coming back and four freshman coming in. If we add Smith a new coach will have a roster of eleven for 2018-2019.

Cuonzo would be acceptable, but fairly bottom the barrel type acceptable.

I'm with this. I'm not on the Cuonzo bandwagon, I just believe it is clearly better than what we have and that it could be much worse. It's a much, much better decision than the Groce hire was. That's not the bar, of course.

I could be much more excited by some other moves being talked about, but I'm also averse to getting my hopes up in some "Lord Van Gundy" style scenario. If we end up with Keatts or Cuonzo, I'll be good. If we shoot higher and bag a "Lovie", I'm great. If we stay with the current situation, I might lose my mind.

I hate this thought. You don't trick recruits into coming here for a coach that's going to get fired. I want kids coming here for the right reasons.

So just maybe, just maybe there was something to that NetJet from SAT to PHX on February 15th.:)

Looks like Cal is going down and will miss tourney barring a miracle. I was a proponent of Cuonzo earlier in this thread but the way they have finished this season has soured me and he isn't on my list anymore.

I just don't think you can argue his resume is strong enough.

Talk about looking disorganized, that was Cal the last 5 minutes today.

Here are my questions with Cuonzo:
- How is his system?
- Is his offense motion a la Keady/Bruce? Different?
- Is his defense man to man 100% of the time a la Bruce?
- When he had a team that implemented his system, what are they known for? Offense? Defense?
- Are they fun teams to watch?
- Who has he put in the NBA?

I'm going to pursue answers to these questions myself, but these are some of the questions I want to answer...

I agree with all of these great questions for ALL CANDIDATES:

I really like coaches who are willing to change up their defense during the games - M2M to zones to half court traps, etc. Some teams (including our own team) really struggle to adjust. Why allow other teams to comfortably run the same crap against you all game?
ALSO from an X and O/style of play perspective:

- What teams are physical, rebound well, overplay passing lanes, and contest every shot relentlessly?
- What teams run tight, well-organized stuff offensively yet they seem to play carefree down the stretch- constantly attacking - pushing transition even after made baskets?
- What teams out there consistently get quality open shots/layups in the half court offense and have a high assist/basket rate?
- What teams run solid out of bounds scoring plays and get quality shots after timeouts?
- What teams consistently blowout bad or average teams? What coaches' teams out there consistently play big in "Big Games" or do they play to their competition?
- Does the coach recruit players to their system or do they just recruit players based on need and ability?

Sizing up the candidates with these questions can help answer some of these X and O/style of play concerns, etc.

I think his brother is a better possibility, but I wouldn't mind either.

Illinois will not hire a coach with any NCAA issues - present or historical.

This means, amongst other non-sensical candidates mentioned here, that Larry Brown, Scott Drew, Randy Ayers, etc. will never, ever be employed at Illinois.

The BoT didn't even want to hire Rick George (back when they could have) because he gave Hart Lee Dykes $100 like 30 years ago.

If somehow Groce slipped through this and came back next season (I hear the collective groans), I would really hope his staff would be Zooked. Keep Walker, and try to bring in Roger Powell and other upgrades.

Has this ever worked? Not attacking, just curious if this has ever brought more than a single season of success...

Do you want to do that because it worked so well with Zook?

Cal averaged 45 points in their last games. No thank you. I'd rather have Groce back if Cuonzo is the best we can do. Hopefully JW has an ace up his sleeve and can pull in someone who can turn this all around.

I like that it's the worst season for mid-majors just about ever with the American, A10, Missouri Valley, CUSA, WCC, Mountain West and everyone else likely to combine for only 4 at large bids tops and it happens to be the year we're looking for a coach.

There also aren't many other major-conference programs looking for a coach. Some more may pop up, but Illinois and NC State and...? Not too many high profile jobs open this year.

This. And this is why I think Groce will be back.

You can't keep Groce. You can take a swing on someone and hope he might be the guy, but you've aleady established that Groce is not the guy.

I'd be ok with Cuonzo because he hasn't proven he can't do it at Illinois, and he has had more success in bigger conferences than Groce had prior to coming here.

My hope though is that we do better than Cuonzo.

First off, LOTS of high quality data, analysis and discussion in this thread. Kudos and thanks to everyone providing that. Based on commentary here, games watched this season and generally extrapolation of data seen, there is in my opinion, a solid set of top priorities to follow the rest of this season:

1) Archie Miller: May be unattainable, but if possible, Miller is a hire that would make any P5 team optimistic about their future. This is the "Shaka Smart" priority candidate of this search. May be holding out for a top 10 gig, but the right combination of meshing with AD, substantial salary boost and internal confidence to make more with the current roster and recruit the region just might convince Miller we (again) have consistently top 10 program potential. Put it this way, Brian Gregory parlayed his 8 year Dayton tenure into a Georgia Tech gig. His tenure at Dayton had an average Kenpom rating of 87. Miller's average Kenpom rating is a 51 and has improved Every. Single. Year. At. Dayton. Rating of 36 this year. 100% home run hire and should be feasible with the right AD and proper offer.

2) Larry Krystkowiak: We can't really think that Utah is a destination job, right? Interesting program, certainly has had its moments, but no way a quality Illinois AD with a respectable budget can't convince the coach at Utah to change jobs. Krystkowiak, in his first year took over a program that just moved to the Pac-12 and finished with a Kenpom rating of 303. In his second year, they jumped to #115. His last 3 years, Krystkowiak has averaged a 27 in the Kenpom ratings. If that isn't impressive, not sure what is. The only counterpoint I am aware of is his lack of recruiting in the Midwest. Personally, I would make a strong push for him regardless of that drawback.

3) Kevin Keatts: the up and comer. Undeniably impressive so far in his time at UNCW. Has demonstrated an ability to win with another coach's players and has a strong reputation as a recruiter. Could climb higher on the list, but that whole Louisville hooker situation was... not ideal. Personally I thought that whole thing was gonna blow up into a bigger deal, but nope. Makes me nervous, but the evidence that he is a winner is strong.

Honorable Mention: Fred Hoiberg. If fired by the Bulls, or IF there is some backroom negotiating before he is officially fired, this could be the Lovie 2.0 hire. Whitman has proven an ability to go get this kind of guy and I have to imagine he would be excited by the prospect of running out 2 former professional coaches as the heads of his 2 revenue sports. That said, the timing would have to be there and Hoiberg would have to want to return to college. I am skeptical, but it isn't out of the realm of feasibility.

On the flipside, the list of coaches that were never going to come here but fans keep bringing up is long and lustrous. Donovan, Stevens, Bennett, S. Miller, Buzz, any coach in the B1G, any former coach of Illinois.

Final comment, Cuonzo Martin. Despite the message board push, I am very much not excited about Cuonzo. I keep hearing about the epic class he brought in last year, and I keep hearing how he was in the tourney. He had Tyrone Wallace, Jabari Bird, Jordan Matthews, Ivan Rabb and Jaylen Brown. That is a filthy amount of talent. To lose 11 games and lose in the first round of the tourney? That is very concerning to me.
Rather than rehash thoughts, I feel like my comments from a while back still hold water. Swap out Hoiberg for Monty Williams? Archie is a tough pull, but I still don't think Krystkowiak is getting enough chatter on here. His hype train should be the lead locomotive if Miller is unattainable...

Glad the Cuonzo Martin propaganda machine has slowed it's roll, but disappointed to read it still exists at all.
