Of guys we've seen mentioned who are at least possible candidates:

1. Gregg Marshall
2. Tony Bennett
3. Archie Miller
4. Buzz Williams
5. Fred Hoiberg
6. Kevin Keatts
7. Cuonzo Martin
8. Larry Krystkowiak
9. Steve Prohm
10. Eric Musselman

I think Buzz is a guy who has been overlooked as a really good coach. I'd love Frank Martin if we couldn't get one of these top 3. I just don't think he's an "Illinois guy". If the best we can do is someone like Dan Muller or Kermit Davis just keep John Groce. I don't know how they'd do here, but it's not worth the gamble. Sit out a year and roll the dice after next season when Groce goes 8-10 again.

I have this feeling Josh Whitman might not hire any of the previously mentioned coaches. I didn't see Lovie's hire coming. Just a feeling, no facts, no rumors heard. Just my spidey sense or possibly the Nyquill I took for my cold.

Well, I just think Keatts is a superstar. Love the way they play and I think he'd be a great fit here.

Jankovich I think is underrated in terms of the size of the role he's had in SMU's turnaround from the beginning. This isn't Emmanuel Mudiay and Keith Frazier running and gunning out there. That was the Larry Brown plan. Instead they've built this gritty, ruthlessly efficient machine that has been better with Jankovich at the helm than it was with Brown (Remember Jankovich started 9-0 last year while Brown was suspended).

And I wish I could see another year of Musselman, but all the ingredients seem to be there with him to be a big time college coach.

You can't possibly support Cuonzo. The way his season went, we'd have our pitchforks out before he landed in town. You'd recover little of the support that has been squandered the past 4 years. I'd be happy with Keatts, Musselman, or Monty. Jank I am less impressed with, but I can see some positives.

So like, hiring Lovie wasn't hiring Nick Saban, you know? I don't mean that as any slight to the hire, just that the particular left field it came out of filled a particular need that Illinois Football had that Illinois Basketball doesn't.

Illinois Football needed visibility, credibility, and stability. And in a state in which the Bears are such a dominant cultural force (for now anyway, oy vey Mike Glennon :tsk:) Lovie was a singular opportunity to provide that in a high-upside package.

Illinois Basketball just needs to win. Someone like Byron Scott would be a good Lovie equivalent. Around the same age, a big name in the sport, high quality, credible coach, he would make a lot of people take notice. But is that attention we need? Do we want Byron Scott? Is he the answer over guys with more translatable college basketball credentials?

Illinois doesn't need to win the press conference with a basketball hire. The program has already done that part. It doesn't need a builder as much as a utilizer.

The Basketball Program doesn't need visibility, credibility, and stability? But the high profile hire wasn't my point. I just don't want the usual suspects. That said, absolutely the candidates mentioned have to be taken seriously and possibly one of them will be the next Illini Coach. I just had a "feeling" that others not considered here might be in play. And finally, I always enjoy your well thought out passionate posts. I am sure everyone wants the same thing, that is win, be fun to watch, compete and ultimately restore our program to national prominence.

I haven't been around for awhile, but before we were taking a pretty maximalist approach to discussing various candidates before.

It was on a different board, but during the Cubit season I put together a list of names to watch as we went forward, something like 50-60 names as I recall. Lovie was on that list. It was a wild occurrence, especially given the timing, but it wasn't like it was beyond the realm of comprehension.

The whiplash of the Cubit extension and endless AD vacuum turning into Lovie so immediately after Whitman was hired during a dead zone of the season really magnified the emotional effect. This is just going to be a bog-standard coaching search for a program in better shape with higher expectations. The Lovie Miracle Factor just isn't there. Which isn't a bad thing at all, it's just the reality of it.

It's telling that "I want a Lovie-style hire" is never, ever accompanied by a name. Like you said, while Lovie was an outside-the-box surprise, his name was mentioned.

Apples and oranges, anyway.

And you put a name to it and it's kinda....odd.

Like, honestly, Kevin Keatts or Tom Thibodeau? Obviously Keatts, right?

Whereas if you're like Washington State, just the "we matter now" factor of hiring Thibs would overwhelm everything else.

I will mention it again, I may not be looking for a name, but a style that I would like to see. Namely up tempo, pressing and aggressive. My knowledge of some the coaches that have been mentioned is not comprehensive. I lay no claim to ultimate knowledge of the possible candidates, this is why I come here and read the posts, for the knowledge, laughs and to be encouraged and I am encouraged that we have the right AD to move this program forward.
