Threads like this make me embarrassed to be an Illini fan...

we are only EIGHT games into the season. Lord almighty.

You're embarrassed that we are passionate enough fans to still be following our team and thinking about future seasons even after not being in the tournament for 3 years?

You're embarrassed that we have the ability to passionately support our current coaching staff and team while also contemplating future seasons during the 4-day stretches in-between games?

You're embarrassed that most fans can root for success and genuinely like someone while still entertaining the possibility that there is a chance we may need to move on if things don't work out well?

Sorry man, I just don't get being embarrassed by people who care enough to be this invested and interested in the well being of a program. I was far more embarrassed by some of the comments surrounding Bruce Weber, who seemed like another good guy who had a lot of bad luck, back in the day than by the pretty tame and cordial attitude towards Groce by most here thus far.

GMAB. If this was coming from a handful on the lunatic fringe, yeah. But it's not. Probably 90% of frustrated Illini fans are really hoping Groce can pull us out of our tailspin.

The Groce tenure has me exponentially more embarrassed than this thread, but hey, to each their own.

I've attempted to do that (again using the 247 player rankings) by taking the average of the recruit ranking for each team in each year and then also the average of all recruits for the five year period.

The biggest problem with this (as noted in the attached table) is that there are a lot of players at smaller schools who just aren't ranked or who come from the prep or 2-year college route. That being said, it still provides another data point that, when combined with the overall rankings, starts to paint a general picture.

You're the best... now just do this with every other team in each coaches conference, create rankings, and show me the coach's team's standing in their conference and I'll be happy ;). But in all seriousness thanks for all the neatly quantified data, paints a clearer picture about these coaches!

I've never wanted a coach to succeed more than Groce. I blame him for a lot, but he's the most likable coach any team I'm a fan of ever has had. Seems like a fantastic guy.

VS, thanks again for providing the data. This all only confirms to me that Marshall should be A#1 target in any coaching search. He recruits very well for the level of school he's at (#1 class in his conference for every one of the past 5 years), meets or exceeds expectations for his team every season, and despite being in a non-P5 conference, gets excellent results on the national stage as exhibited by his getting to the NCAA tourney and competing very well once he's there. He has to be among the top 5-10 coaches in the nation as far as both recruiting and winning, up there with Coach K, Izzo, Few, Boeheim, Wright, Kruger, etc. Once again, back up a dump truck full of money to him, JW!

Every single person on this thread would love look back, laugh, and scrap this entire thread if we are somehow competitive in the Big Ten and make the big dance. Last week gave us no indication that this is the case. And to be honest, if one was to argue, you could say beating NC State didn't really change this much unless as a team, we limit our turnovers and cause other teams to turn it over a fair amount which is what happened against the Wolfpack. We let them shoot 52% from the field. This won't win you a lot of games unless there is a difference in turnovers and you win the rebounding battle. I'm not counting on us scoring 50 points every half.

This is a coaching thread, and we're four years and eight games into the current coach's tenure.

As has been mentioned by others, this is a testament to the fandom of anyone that's still here to even discuss it. Many of my fellow Illini that I graduated with have completely given up on the program and lost touch with it. The basketball sellout steak is a distant memory. Even our little United Center group that used to be 20 people is now zero.

I find it difficult to question the fandom of anyone that's still interested enough after the last 10 years to care to discuss the future of the program. :thumb:

Hmmmmmm....

Just curious why you feel this thread is as pictured?

Is it because the Illini faithful have no reason to discuss a coaching upgrade or is it the way we are discussing it?

I for one wish with all my Illini heart that JG would eliminate our doubts with some adequate coaching decisions that would lead our senior/experienced team to an NCAA birth :chief:

Mostly because I've seen too many of these over the years, and the quality of every single one was pretty much the same. Wild conjecture, speculation, etc. do nothing to make for a quality discussion, and being only 8 games into the season reinforces my view as to the schizophrenic nature of a lot of the posts on this board. :lalala:

And I am also hoping that JFG leads us to the promised land and an NCAA berth , although it's been long enough for us to consider a berth in this year's tourney as a "birth" or even a "re-birth".

Even a cursory view of this thread would show that, with almost no exceptions, it is not wild conjecture (although I think someone mentioned Billy Donovan), and people have gone out of their way to provide as much data, background and context as possible so people can have an objective discussion.

Again, this is not "8 games into a season" - it is "8 games into year five."

The thread is back! I'll maintain what I've always been maintaining. We won't fire Groce mid-season so he gets the full slate of games to work things out. However, this is definitely NOT what we needed to start B1G play.

If Groce gets the boot, I'm very interested to see what Whitman can pull out of his hat

#467
I'm thinking the only reason Whitman didn't get rid of Groce is because he didn't have a home run hire lined up like Lovie. I'm thinking/hoping/praying that Whitman has been doing some work in the background.

If the Bulls fire Hoiberg throw whatever amount of money he asks for his way. I'm sure he realizes he should've stayed in the college basketball game so he'll probably be looking to get back into it. He's a Midwest guy and I'm assuming he could probably convince Tilmon and Frazier to stick around.

This would be the guy I want to replace Groce.

Get this clown out of here. This is not a well coached or prepared team.

It'd be interesting to look at Big10 or other power 5 program's coaching staffs to see what kind of turnover/replacements theyve made when they had poor records. Are we an outlier with our staff stability over the last 5 years?

Yep. Problem is, Bulls will have to fire him mid-season for this to happen.

Unless there is a total collapse (team quits) I think he has one more year. Recruiting has improved but coaching the fundamentals isn't there. I also have never bought into the quick shots. I think there are benefits of running an offense beyond just getting a good shots. It fatigues the defense, it gets teammates involved, and you collect fouls on the defense. Also you often get a better shot, than the quick 3.

Hoilberg would be a good hire if things go way sour.
