Sweeping Iowa & Nebraska this weekend will be a step in right direction.
Michigan State should be a win but Michigan will be tough the following weekend.
Michigan State should be a win but Michigan will be tough the following weekend.
The Illini were still without Aron Hiltzik (foot) but Gui Gomes and Noe Khlif picked up key singles victories at No. 2 and No. 6 to put Illinois up 3-2. Wisconsin's Lamar Remy led Aleks Vukic 5-3 in the third at No. 1 singles but the Illini junior came back to force a tiebreak and then he clinched the win by taking the tiebreak 7-2. The match at No. 3 went unfinished with Illinois freshman Aleks Kovacevic leading 4-3 in the third.
Hiltzik may be ready to go next week against Iowa and Nebraska but I wouldn't be surprised to see him sit on more week to get ready for Michigan the following week.

BREAKING NEWS: NCAA names upcoming championship sites:
2019 - UCF (Orlando)
2020 - Oklahoma State
2021 - UCF
2022 - Illinois (Champaign)
How in the world does UCF get it twice in 3 years?
It's not at UCF, they are the "host school". The event will be at the new UTSA "national campus" that opened in Orlando recently. They'll probably be having the championships there, maybe every other year if this schedule is any indication.
Illini just took the double point over #2 Ohio St. Had to have that to have any kind of chance. Could be interesting...
Yeah, Hiltzik couldn't close out his match. Doesn't matter for Big Ten standings as Illinois would be 3rd either way, but would have boosted the ranking.
Illinois doesn't lose anyone of significance either and adds a couple of good recruits. Could come down to the match in Columbus next season.
Hopefully the recent improvement in doubles play keeps going.
