We weren't real good this year. I don't get all the gloom and doom. Sure LB was good and I'm sad to see him go but I think we can pick up his 15ppg/5rpg with several players next year and possibly better D.

Its tough to not have a balanced team. We saw this during the Groce era loud and clear. Leron brought a midrange + post game no other player on this team, and most like no other player on next years team was or will be able to bring. Not to mention his increased effectiveness at the 3 ball.

Just because we transfer his stats doesnt mean other areas of the team suffer. Having the dynamic duo of Ayo and Frazier should heavily offset scoring losses from Leron. I'm optimistic, but I still think we need an impact big and Jones to compete for anything more than this year. Lerons impact was much greater than just numbers.

Illinois-Iowa State ought to be close. We'll be their only shot at a win as well.

I'm not ruling out SDSU or the possibility that Arizona's program implodes, at least for next season.

Finke got all the flak for post defense but it was a team effort. Offensively Black was comparable to Bridges IMHO.

I think we can be competitive next year. Top 3 in the B1G? Probably not. But we can make it into the middle of the pack. We lost quite a few coin-flips this year. Win some of those next year, and our record looks a little less horrible.

Man... we will not be picked to win a game in that thing.

We might if we draw AZ. They are in for a big step down and that’s not even considering who the coach might be and what the FBI’s going to do.

Yes, we are not going to be good, not good at all
Frankly, it's a bit mind boggling how much we've fallen, how quickly.

Groce was frustrating, but we were better than this. Recruiting hasn't been awful, it's just odd to look at us now having just finished 13th in the Big Ten and will now likely have to fight for the 13th spot next year to avoid being last.

BU is going have to find a way to win more close games. And he's going to have to find someone who can rebound next year. To claim "we're good with the team we have", "we're going to surprise people" as he did before last season was a complete blind spot. If he doesn't realize he can't compete with who he has on the roster in the Big Ten, then that is on him. What I worry about with BU is that he doesn't know what good looks like.

Right, there doesn’t appear to be much turnover in the roster.

What did you expect him to say? "We are gonna suck next year. I don't know why we are even going to play the games."

People said the same thing when Hill left, that his scoring couldn’t be replaced.
It was.
Someone will fill out the loss of scoring, and since Black wasn’t a lockdown defender or dominant rebounder i’m hoping the team can improve in those areas. Maybe foul less too. :D

Lots of thoughts on different subjects that I'll just condense here as opposed to in 3 different threads.

Although I hope another big gets added and a dead eye shooter wing...I think that with no more transfers and our current signees....18-19 will be better than 17-18.

Black leaving looks like a glaring hole. And I give him a TON of credit for becoming the person I was most confident in while shooting a 3 (i Never thought I'd say that in a million years)....but his defense/rebounding was still not great. Finke guarding the other team's 4 as long as its not someone like Bridges who is a sure fire NBAer will be fine because Finke is longer than Black. He'll still get blown by on occasion but he;ll have Ebo or Kane as an athletic Rim protector behind him...as opposed to the unathletic version of himself. I think if Finke gets his shot going early in the year and some confidence, he becomes a valuable offensive weapon as far as spacing, and a serviceable defensive player.(I didn't say great...i didn't even say good).

Black leaving is absolutely the right decision for him. He is who he is, which is a very good offensive college basketball player with limitations that will most likely keep him from the NBA. His fiancee is graduating, he has his degree as well. Sticking around another year doesn't make him grow 3 more inches or change the limitations he has. His earning years as a professional athlete is finite....and signing with an agent will help him navigate those waters of international basketball. Even if he's not making 100K+ somewhere....he'll start making some money and he and his fiancee can get started with their life.

As much as I rooted for Mark Smith...his transfer I almost welcomed. He looked lost as soon as the level of competition stepped up. Although it's hindsight, the people who said he was exposed against Simeon were probably right. His handle looked loose even without pressure at times. He's gonna have to tighten that up if he (or his dad) expect him to be a point whether it be at the P5 level or even the Mid-Major level. Mid major hoops is full of ultra quick but undersized pest type point guards that just aren't big enough to get on the radar of big schools.

I can tell his a somewhat introverted , quiet kid. But his body language once he started struggling was brutal. He looked defeated, shoulders slouched or shrugged. Completely the opposite of AJ, even when AJ struggled. he was clapping, cheering, first off the bench. He's limited with what he can do, but he does what he can to the best of his ability and is a phenomenal teammate....he's certainly making the most of his time at UI and I'm happy for him.

I also think BU felt somewhat obligated to play Smith and Alstork (and the vision of how to average 20 PPG as a recruiting tool). It was glaringly obvious that their time on the floor wasn't what most of us hoped...and i hoped each would snap out of it, but neither one did. I wonder if the TJL alley opp to Alstork would have connected back in December...if he hammers that home, the SFC goes crazy...the entire season goes different because alstork is a different player with more confidence. I really feel like he felt he never got the love from fans that he expected based on his use of social media, how he announced, etc, and was almost chasing after that adulation the entire year...and then it unraveled, and then it was a downhill slide from there. A deep, long, dark slide.

TJL(assuming he stays) can play the Alstork role this year ...we'll have more depth (Ayo, Demonte, Kipper, Griffin)...and with the aggressive nature of the defense, we will always foul, just need to avoid the Alstork 60 feet from the basket fouls.

In summary...we'll be better next year....I'll sign the contract with my beach house with a Sharpie.

RickBB, you are spot on about the politics. BU had to play both Smith and Alstork, he had no choice.

Fifth year transfers are total crap shoots. Any thinking Mizzou fan (oxymoron) will tell you that the MVP of that team was transfer Kassius Robertson who teamed up very well with Jordan Barnett. No Kassius no big dance.

Several people have commented that Smith looked a step slow after all the weight training. I will argue that it is the other side of the equation. As the competition gets better, the guy guarding you is probably quicker.

I also think next year could be a lot better. Doug Altenberger shot 30% as a freshman and 50% as a sophomore. It was nothing more than the game slowing down for him.

Same for us when McLaurin came in and solidified the inside with Egwu in Groce's first year. Without him we're not able to help cause replay in the last two minutes when two or more guys are in the ball going out of bounds. It would've been bad for the Illini and bad for college basketball if Big Sam hadn't transferred to Illinois.

I'm hoping for that sophomore leap next year too.

offensively, getting the ball into Leron was a high percentage scoring opportunity... it also kept the defense busy in the paint.

that said, he wasn't a great passer, only had 12 assists after the first 5 games, 7 in Big Ten season... so I see a team that will move the ball more and better, which will increase the entire team's efficiency as a whole.

When the ball went into Leron it was like going into a black hole.

He was improving on this by the end of the year.

And given his FG% I was ok with him never passing it most of the time. It usually panned out in our favor.

Agreed, but every team we played knew it too. We became one dimensional.

Without that option, we were usually zero-dimensional.

I understand why Leron is going pro but for the fans sake I wish he would stay.

Its amazing to think we might actually be worse next year than we were this year unless BU pulls a rabbit out of the hat with an impact 5th year transfer or a miracle last minute signing.

I was wondering if anyone had given a shout out to congratulate Coach Underwood and his family on the 1-year anniversary of his becoming the Illinois coach.

We will not be worse next year than we were this year. Talented Freshmen (Trent, DaMonte, Ebo) will all be much improved and more comfortable in BU's system. TeJon (if he stays) now knows what's expected from him and will be a great asset on defense.

Same can be said for Kipper. He know understands what the coach needs/wants from him. He turned into a great 3rd option at the end of the year and took over some parts of the game when Leron and Trent were our or not hitting.

If Finke can be moved back to the 4, he'll be better.

Ayo, Samba and Griffin can provide solid minutes at their positions and add much needed athleticism. And we will bring in a couple of more recruits that will do the same.

If we improve our finishing at the rim, we will be much better.

The loss of Leron, Alstork and Smith this year does not equal the loss we had of Malcolm Hill, Thorne, Tate, Morgan, DJWilliams, Abrams and JCL.

I'd assume we'll be picked about 12th - 13th, ahead of Rutty and perhaps Iowa. I'd be willing to bet a pretty penny we finish no higher than 10th.

Only beach houses are allowed as betting collateral on here :D

I agree though, pre season 12-14, but I'm a little more optimistic of getting 8-10

Hey, I'm an 09 alum, I can't afford that....yet!! :thumb:

I'd love to share the optimism, but losing probably our second best player makes it tough. It's a long spring/summer, so we'll see who we can pick up on the transfer market.
