2020-21 Illini Men's Golf

What's up with the transfer LANG? Based on his background I thought he would be a consistent scorer for us.
Yeah, he is a sophmore and has potential but this team is ultra-loaded. Giovanni could even get in the top 5 and Varun transferred because I'm sure he saw the writing on the wall.

Not remotely knowledgeable on college golf. Don't they play other schools like wrestling and tennis do?
typically you play 5 guys and count the best 4 scores and added it all up in the end. Usually against 10-20 schools at a time.

He is playing as an individual so he might be working on his game instead of competing. We do have 4 in the top 10 and two tied for the lead. Good start for the guys

Illinois looks to be running away with this tournament. They currently have the top 4 individual scorers:

which is truly impressive we were not the favorites in this, a think 3 or 4 highest ranked team. Very impressive start

It's got to be cold there, no?

Just checked, 36 degrees. May be an advantage, coming from the North.
Weather is one of coach Shell's recruiting pitches. Though most prospects prefer playing in perfect weather, Small convinces some that if they want to play professionally that they will face their share of inclement weather on tour so they had better learn to play in those conditions.

Illini up 16 shots with two or three holes to go; four Illini in the Top 10 with Feagles steady as a rock and leading.

And just like that, Illini golf will be 15-0! I always find that interesting, but it makes perfect sense.

This win should put Illinois in Top 25 nationally, I think. UAB may drop out to make way.

Way to go, Illini!

Just like that Illini are ranked #10, according to Golfstat 2/16. Confusing: Golfweek had them tied for #25 but dropped them before team even played. I expect Illini will rise after win in Mobile. They don't appear in NCAA coaches' poll - yet.

Sorry, I was wrong. Illini are 14-0, not 15-0. Total field of 15 teams at Mobile.

I think most of these southern teams played a fall season which gives them a tremendous advantage (even more than in a typical season where they can practice outside throughout the winter). Let's see how we fare vs. the SEC teams next week.

Yeah, putting stock in team rankings in golf is a messy game. I always look at these as very ballpark. You want to be in the top 30 but as actual indicators of who is better they can be way off. Many times I've checked out fields and fields and been fooled. Going into tourneys the players actually know who the 'favorites' are and it often wont be the highest ranked team.

The LSU Invitational should be a massive test, but Mobile wasn't a shabby tourney. LSU Inv. has 5 teams or so in the top 20 and others that will be very strong. A top 5 finish in this would be a perfectly fine outcome.

What a tremendous start the back 9 ate our lunch and we still stayed at the top. This is a big boy tournament and a high finish will legitimize that ranking.

Per Small, the wind really picked up in the afternoon.
I follow Golfstat, but where do you find Coach's comments after a round? Thanks. Is there some link on Golfstat or U of I golf website?

Of course, right as I say that, he shoots and 8 to drop from -4 to -1 :(
Funny how that kind of thing always seems to happen. It does to me at least.
Got to look into hole #11; Ji had an eight there, too.
But the guys are doing well against a strong field.

Illini are in contention for the win. I'm sure Jerry will bounce back tomorrow.

Hole #11 has water on the right virtually the entire length of the fairway. Might have had something to do with the 8s. Wasn't supposed to be too windy down there today. Don't know.

Hang in there and GO ILLINI!

Detry and Pieters also having good weekends. Both find themselves in the top 100 of the World Golf Rankings and are looking to move up if they can go low today.
