2020-21 Illini Men's Golf

I'm I correct in thinking this Illini team is better suited for match play than stroke play? The history of Mike Small's teams say that.

Not really. Illinois has done ok in match play over the years, but not great. It took them a long time to finally win the Big Ten Match Play tournament, even though they were clearly the best team most years.

And with as many times as they've qualified for match play at the NCAA championships, if they were great at it you would think they would have won it at least once by now. Many lower-ranked and seeded teams than Illinois have won it over the years

OU looks like they made a switch. They are replacing their number 1 golfer Reband who had a terrible stroke play for Welch. This is interesting as it puts a guy who has not played the course under this pressure. Could be an advantage for us but we need to come out swinging.

Good find! Wonder if there is an illness at play. Tough call to sit a veteran who was playing #1. Either way the Illini are ready.

Good to see feagles getting plenty of TV time.
Not sure if you saw the segment where they talked about how Feagles' uncle Jeff was a punter in the NFL forever and was on the Giants team that beat the undefeated Pats in Super Bowl 42. Jeff Feagles also does broadcasting work with the Giants now. This is all very familiar to the play-by-play guy Bob Papa, who is also the radio voice of the Giants.

I think this OU - Illinois matchup is a tossup. Yes, OU beat us by 4 strokes at stroke play. That's 1 stroke a day, spread over 4 golfers. Hardly decisive.

But in match play, all 5 scores count. Illinois was better there 3 of the 4 days. Hence the tossup comment. I like our chances men.

Match play is an entirely different beast, one that I love actually. Often your best player is not your best match play guy. It's a toss up every match from here on out.

The key the NCAA Championship is make it to match play and see what happens.

Yes. Match play is something. I love it.

Last time ILL/OKLA went head to head was 2017 at Rich Harvest Farms. Okla beat Illini 3.5-1.5 in the final four.

But that's history.

I just hope Illini make it to final four this time so they go to East Lake Cup and we can watch them on Golf Channel this fall. One step at a time, though.

Congratulations to Illini and especially to Michael Feagles. He will be sorely missed next season.

Exactly. At this point it’s about mental toughness and avoiding the hot team on the wrong day. Hopefully we have that hot team feel this morning that OU wished they avoided.

I love this exposure also, so much coverage at this event.

case in point about match play, Gio birdies the 1st to take a 1up lead

well this is actually a great start. 2 up in 2 matches and up 3-1 overall, early days, but the beauty of match play is pressure mounts quick.

This is a good sign: BTN now playing ILL/MICH from '89 basketball. Kendall, 26 points. May the vibe pass to Illini golfers this day. Beat OKLA.

Just looking at the stroke play results, the Oklahoma trio of Brightwell/McAllister/Cummins all shot well (between our 1st and 2nd best). If we can take 1/3 of those matchups I like our odds.

Of the 3, Tadiotto currently up 3 through 5 on Brightwell.
