No Ryan quit in December at Wisconsin and he had multiple years of good teams
Bo had announced his retirement the preceding summer and stated publicly that he wanted Gard to succeed him. He then vacillated about it and began to coach in the fall, then retired in December. Not a comparable situation, IMO. They'd been to the FF the two preceding seasons.

Only comparable if both moves were to improve the chance of getting their preferred choice in the spot

I’ve never followed them closely, but Turgeon always seemed to be a better recruiter than coach to me. And recruiting has fallen off a bit the past 2 years. I expect Manning will be given a good chance to stay on unless an unexpected name becomes available.

Being Booed by the fans while your recruits are in the stands doesn’t sound like a road to success.

almost impossible to fire somebody for cause (and not pay contract) unless you get an NCAA show cause letter.

Pittino was last one I recall where the University got out of paying and he had multiple violations - Adidas FBI wire taps/ strippers / restaurant sex extortion /

Same school that rehired Petrino after after Arkansas firing for affair with employee.

One's gotta think Penny Hardaway is inching closer to being gone every day. Especially after his tirade last night. If they don't fine or suspend him substantially, he will basically have free rein to do whatever he wants, whenever he wants.
not sure his contract situation, but they have a good history and can find a good replacement. Lots of possible transfer pick ups if he gets canned.

They are in major financial trouble as a university and are still paying Tubby Smith until next year, so I doubt they pay the buyout owed to Penny along with the money to bring in another high profile coach.

Bruce Weber (KSU 10-8) , Jeff Capel (Pitt 7-12) , Tom Crean (GA 5-14) and Bobby Hurley (ASU 6-10). Should be interesting to see who is new coach at these places.

Hardway is bad 10-8 but at least he recruits well. He needs to hire a former head coach to run practices and help him game manage (see Phil Martelli 30 years HC at St Joseph who runs things for Juwon at Michigan).

Maybe somebody will recycle Greg Marshall from Wichita State. He was on everybody's list a few years ago. Bruce Pearl and Kelvin Sampson got 2nd chances. Pitino is back at Iona. If you win it does not appear to matter what you did wrong.

I know Martelli was there to help Howard adapt to college differences, but do we really think he can’t run practices or game manage? He was an nba assistant.

I think that misunderstands Hardaway's status there. He is not going to get fired. Memphis' last several hires have not gone well and they have financial motivation to make this work. They are also at a stage of "if this doesn't work, what will?" Moving on from Penny isn't a good option. He's well respected there and among many summer programs and high schools. He brings in recruits. Just gotta find a way to make it work. Starting over with another coach isn't likely to get them moving the right direction any quicker. This is Penny, sink or swim. Penny doesn't leave this job unless it is a resignation.

They hired a guy with no experience because he is a local legend. He cheated to get those stud recruits, and now that everyone can pay players, recruiting doesn't look so promising. They ran a potential Hall of Fame coach in Tubby Smith out after 2 years. Memphis did this themselves.

Others are right. They need to bring in an old experienced guy to be the actual coach and let Penny be the figurehead, or he's got to go. His record has got 1 game worse each year, despite a ton of talent. No NCAA tournament appearances. If they want to win, they should probably find a coach that knows what he's doing.

The recruiting will be interesting. Their 2022 class is one guy ranked over 200. Looking at their 2023 prospects, it looks like they're in on a lot of 5 star guys but may realistically get 1 at best. After that, it could be another bad class. Penny's coaching without an extreme talent advantage is going to create some pretty ugly records.
