So I missed that the men's hockey tournament started earlier today (or late last night U.S. time depending on how you want to look at it) and we have our first upset of that tournament.

Denmark, who is playing in their first Olympics in men's ice hockey, scored 2 goals in the 1st period and upset the Czech Republic 2-1.

And since China doesn't have a lot of hockey talent on its own, most of their men's ice hockey team was recruited from abroad. They have 11 Canadians, 9 Chinese, 3 Americans, and 1 Russian on their roster. The 3 Americans include Chris Chelios' son, Jake Chelios.

I'll get the U.S. schedule posted later tonight.

Here's the schedule of games for the U.S. men's ice hockey team in the preliminary round:

-Thursday, 7:10 AM CT: vs. China
-Friday, 10:10 PM CT: vs. Canada
-Sunday, 7:10 AM CT: vs. Germany

All the games will air on USA Network.

It's also worth nothing that all 12 teams in this tournament will go through to the playoff round, ranked 1-12. They will use the following criteria in order to determine seeding:

-higher position in the group
-higher number of points
-better goal difference
-higher number of goals scored for
-better IIHF World Ranking

This means that each of the 3 group winners plus the best 2nd place team will go straight through to the quarterfinals.

US looked like the faster team for large portions of the game.

Agreed though having a mostly college age team will help with that. Last night's win is even more impressive when you consider that Canada, even with having vets and more NHL experienced guys like Eric Staal on their roster, also had 3 of the top 5 picks in the most recent NHL draft (all of whom went to Michigan incidentally). The U.S. had one of the top 5 picks from that draft, Matty Beniers, who went #2 to Seattle.

They should be able to beat Germany tomorrow morning (central time) and if they do, they would win the group and have a bye through to the quarterfinals. That means that they wouldn't play again until late Tuesday night (again, central time) at the earliest.

The men’s downhill (not sure what the correct name is) that was televised last night was bizarre. Snowing so hard they had to spray a colored line down the hill so the skiers had some idea what direction the next flags were.

Somehow they did. The ones who went early did much better before the snow started to accumulate on the course. I don’t know how they don’t all blow out their knees with as tight as they have to make those bindings.

U.S. and Slovakia headed to OT tied at 2. U.S was up 2-1 late, with the Slovaks scoring with about 45 seconds remaining in regulation. Americans had plenty of opportunities to score in the 3rd period, including a 5 on 3 power play, and couldn't cash in.

Slovakia wins 3-2 (1-0 in shootout). Disappointing finish for the Americans based on how they played in the preliminary round. Slovakia's opponent in the semis is TBD as the tournament is reseeded after the quarterfinals.

Canada defeats USA 3-2. U.S. dug themselves into a 3 goal deficit and couldn't come all the way back. Not too surprised to see Canada win as U.S. was only team to allow 4 goals or less to Canada the entire tournament.

Does anyone think the Russian skater fell on purpose to deflect some attention from her drug test and show she's vulnerable and human?

Just a thought...
