Japan was on tired legs. Played a ton of defense. Brazil took advantage. Second match Germany has outplayed Paraguay but a huge defensive mishap by Germany gives Paraguay a 1-0 lead

question for all you diehard soccer fans

are 1-0, 1-1, 2-1 scores really what FIFA wants for all these games ?

is that really what satisfies the world wide soccer fan ? for me ? I would prefer scores similar to hockey : 4-3 or so with the knowledge that at any given point in a game a goal could be scored.
I just never have that feeling when watching these games & I lose interest

In the knockouts you'll see low scoring matches more commonly as it becomes more of a defensive battle. The World Cup final is considered to be one of the more "boring" matches to watch because the stakes are so high and no one wants to make a massive mistake (the 2022 final is an exception to this).

These two matches today have been incredibly fun. No doubt FIFA is pleased. They've been contrasts of styles, complexities, and emotions - the essence of the sport.

You can ask this for every sport:

Baseball, do you prefer a 2-1 pitchers dual where one swing of the bat can win it?

Football, do you like 13-10 where the game hangs on one mistake/play or 38-35?

Many feel the same way you do. Unless there is a lot of offense, in a time where instant gratification is a requirement, leagues have changed the rules to hamstring the defense to promote scoring.

Hockey changed the rules completely to bump scoring. The two line pass was eliminated to promote more scoring, 3 on 3 in OT, etc.

Baseball lowered the mound, implemented the DH, took away the shift, they have a pitch clock, can't throw over more than twice, etc. Everything to move the game along and score more

Football made playing corner impossible. Everything is a flag, a PI can be a 50 yard penalty, it's pass happy, you can't sniff the QB, etc.

In soccer, what can you do? 9 v 9? 7 v 7 after 90 minutes. Get rid of offsides? They'd have to figure out a way to open up the game. That's an ENORMOUS amount of ground to cover to take guys off the field.

Not sure what the answer is if you're looking for 5-4 consistently.

Was at a bar eating lunch and a contingent of blonde female swedish fans from local college came in. wearing jerseys.

The entire bar stopped to stare at them walk by. We all immediately stopped rooting for France and started cheering for Sweden. !
