I processed my feeling about Lovie a long time ago. He sucked and I can't perform the mental gymnastics needed to sing his praises or give him credit for where we are today. Yes I guess someone had to occupy the position between Cubit and Bielema but I don't think Lovie did any anything special.

I guess I'm just a simpleton who judges coaches based on W-L.
I think we can agree that he was not a good college coach and probably an NFL coach as well post-Bears. We were such a mess that we weren't getting a guy that comes and fixes us day 1.

He got some good recruits but failed to adapt to the college game on the field and couldn't develop what he brought in. My only praise of Lovie is that he left it better than he found it, which wasn't that hard, lol.

I mean on some level the amount of NFL talent he had access to in that Covid season makes him look worse, not better.

And Bert deserves colossal credit, not just from a player development perspective, but because it was his decision to use the weird Covid rules to invite the entire 2020 team back. Under different circumstances a raft of NFL talent would have flooded to the exit door in December 2020, indeed many people hoped that's what would happen in order to "accelerate the rebuild" and get "his guys" in the door in the nascent transfer portal.

BB rejecting that changed the culture in the building, and that pays dividends to this day.

who is coming here to clean up after Mike Thomas and Lasagna Man?
I suspect Whitman could have pulled a rabbit out of his hat. He's good at that.

But we go through the doomed, miserable Cubit interim year in that hypothetical, at a moment when things were getting scary fan-interest wise.

As I said, all's well that ends well. I wouldn't trade the MS 100th anniversary, or the Pat Bryant walk-off, or Shane Beamer's meltdown, for anything in the world.
