Vonn posted to her Instagram late today that she has a compound tibia fracture that will require multiple surgeries.
I’m not a doctor, and I didn’t stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, so I don’t claim to understand what a “complex” fracture is and how it differs from a compound fracture. All I know is I’ve heard Vonn has a “complex” tibia fracture, which sounds just as bad if not worse than a “compound” fracture.

Per Google AI: "A complex tibia fracture refers to a bone shattered into multiple pieces (comminuted) or severely displaced, while a compound (open) tibia fracture is defined by the bone breaking through the skin. "

U.S. women's hockey defeated Canada 5-0 today. Canadians were without their captain due to a "lower body injury" suffered against Czechia.

U.S. women will face Italy on Friday in the quarterfinals.

NBC just showed the Lindsey Vonn crash and yeesh, it looked bad.
As an aside I woke up early Sunday am to feed the dog & turned the TV on. Within 30 seconds the Vonn crash occurred. Interesting way to start the day.

I saw a lot of folks online giving her grief for coming back & trying. Personally, I respect the heck out of her bravery. She didn't crash cause she hurt her knee. She crashed cause she was going for it. Fully committed to the effort. She was either gonna win or crash out trying. IMO you have to respect someone who is that committed to what they are doing.

Is it just me or did Chloe Kim get hijacked in the halfpipe last night. Seemed to me (an admitted layman) that she was far superior in her run 1 vs the Korean girl in run 3. Only best score counts but it seems the judges left a little on the table in the round 1 score so something was left for round 3. Kinda shaky.

And now Ilia Malinin goes into the pantheon of history of massively hyped American Olympians who failed to deliver the goods in the brightest moment. At least he's young & may make it back. It has a Dan & Dave vibe to it for me.

It was just a poor performance at the worst time. It has to stink knowing you’re aiming for that performance for four years and don’t come close to the standard you’ve set and the world knows you can achieve.

Being an athlete in a sport where the Olympics are it has to be a huge amount of self imposed pressure.

On the lighter side, we have beef in curling!! 🤣

The audio and caption below are 100% not safe for work or young ears, but it’s awesome! (Dan, if you have to delete this, I understand. But I hope at least the text link can stay up.)

Dalibor Dvorsky scoring a goal with 39 seconds left in Slovakia's 5-3 loss to Sweden today means that Slovakia will likely go through to the quarterfinals as the winner of Group B. With a win today, Finland, who is currently up 4-0 on Italy, would finish tied with 6 points with Slovakia and Sweden. Since it is a three-team tie, Slovakia would go through based on goal differential in games between the three teams (Slovakia +1, Finland 0, Sweden -1).

Lol the Finland-Italy game is so lopsided right now that USA Network just switched over to the ski jumping competition.
That hockey game reminded me of the scene in “Strange Brew” where the players just bull rushed the Mackenzie Brothers in goal. Just a constant attack on the Italian goal.

Brazil and South America has its first winter Olympic medal after Lucas Pinheiro Braathen won the gold medal in the men's giant slalom earlier today. Pinheiro Braathen was born in Norway and had competed for Norway in skiing competitions up until a couple years ago. His mother is from Brazil and he had spent different parts of his youth living there and in Norway.

U.S. men's hockey effectively locked into the 2 seed in the Olympic hockey tournament with a win today vs. Germany. Only way U.S. could get 1 seed ahead of Canada would be to win by at least 10 goals.

The way nobody gets eliminated in the group stage is kinda lame.

True though the group winners and the best 2nd place team get a bye into the quarterfinals so teams do at least have incentive to avoid playing an extra game. That's why Slovakia was celebrating so much at the end of their loss against Sweden.

The women's tournament having all 5 from one group and the top 3 from the other group is more lame by comparison.

Oh I agree. Didn't mean to bag on him. He was money in the team event. Just seems the uber hyped Americans fall short more than they don't. I was extremely impressed with how he conducted himself in defeat. He didn't hide from it. He owned it & did all the press stuff. Congratulated the winner also.

Class like that reflects on the person. Maybe he'll be a Dan Jansen type who fails at first but then gets it done on a 2nd try in the next Olympics.
