3/1 Polls - Illinois #4 in AP Poll

#6
It is going to be really annoying if we go 0-2 this week and get passed up by Iowa...don’t really care about getting passed in the rankings but for that fourth No. 1 seed. Hopefully if it comes down to those two, head to head wins out.

Iowa at #5 really surprised me. This means they can pass us if the Illini lose to Michigan

Here's to losing less than those around us! Also the Wisconsin win wasn't too bad either ;)

I don't care that it doesn't really matter, I like to see it.

It's just an arbitrary designation. A little number next to our names assigned by a bunch of journalists whose names we will largely never know, a significant percentage of them undoubtedly living unfulfilled love lives.

But still. With Illini Nation basically living through a Greek tragedy over the past 15 years or so...

You gotta savor these moments. Breathe em in. Extract all the joy you can get.

I know Ima be walking extra upright down the block today. Slappin random people on their rear ends - the high school AP History teacher, the corporate exec, the old lady at the pastry shop with the slight limp - and lettin em know:

"Fighting Illini number 4 in the nation - the entire nation! Ya heard?!?".

Kind of interesting that we had fewer points this week than last (1350 vs 1356) but moved up a slot. That tells me our rise was mainly because people weren't as sure this week who we should be behind.

Edit: actually looks like there was one fewer AP voter this week, so per-voter we did move up a tad, from an average of 4.8th to 4.6th.

We will remain #2 seed in the BTT no matter what happens.
I think that is more important although I hope we go 2-0 this week of course.

Why are Iowa and W Virginia rated 5 and 6 in the AP but 12 and 13 in the coaches poll? Do the coaches know more than the writers or the writers pay more attention and spend more time looking at everyone than the coaches?

It's incredible how there is general consensus that our team frequently and frustratingly doesn't play to its full potential (whether it's too many turnovers, poor FT shooting, starting games slowly, freshman mistakes, etc.), and IN SPITE OF THAT here we are in March ranked #4 in the country and sitting near the top of a historically-strong B1G. Wow. This is a special team that we need to collectively take a moment to appreciate. Make some noise in the BTT and NCAA tournament, and we are possibly watching an all-time great Illinois team create some lasting memories for themselves and all of us.

What a treat. Let's enjoy the ride.

Whether it's fair or not, teams are ultimately judged based upon postseason performance. If this team looks bad in the BTT and loses early in the NCAA tournament (as unlikely as that might be), it won't be mentioned in the same category as the past greats.

Of course they wouldn't be mentioned in the same category as past greats if they look bad in the BTT (not as important) and the NCAA (everything). Neither would the past greats had they struggled in their postseasons. That is why they were great.

I think you and I are saying the same thing here. sacraig asked why I wrote that this team is only possibly an all-time great Illinois team. My response was that we won't know until we see how they perform in the post-season. It looks like you're agreeing with me.

I'll never understand how Baylor and UM can take long breaks for COVID, and not lose their rankings. The 2 and 3 slots have been largely unavailable to teams that were still playing, even though those two were relaxing. Weird.

Pretty sure folks at the NCAA wanted to prioritize player safety over all else, so they did not want to create incentive for teams to potentially hide positive COVID results out of fear of losing their rankings.
