Who are we rooting for today? Need something to take my mind off the nervous energy before 5:30. Just watched the Coleman video of Kansas State's loss last night, love that emotion and love what Coleman did for us.
For the gambling types, who are we backing today? I start to research IU-Oregon and see the analysis going for both sides. Suppose I can always do the emotional hedge and take IU.

Watching Akron. John Groce has them rollin. So interesting how a guy can be that good in a mid-major conference and be so wildly overwhelmed in a major conference.
When recruiting is your primary weakness, that's the sweet spot for you as a coach.

Akron making Illinois look like a grind it out team. 9-15 from 3 in the first 13 minutes of the game so far. Bowling Green in screaming distance, so if Akron cools off from 3 they might be able to get back into it.
Side note - Battle of the Midtown uniforms today with Groce and Todd Simon. Also, one of the drawbacks of the ESPN+ era is you get to hear the bottom of the barrel announce teams. These two guys sound like they plucked them off of the local Cleveland high school basketball radio broadcast team.

Over the years, one of my guilty pleasures watching the Illinois and Iowa high school state championships has been doing some "Mystery Science 3000" commentary/note taking regarding the announcers. I know people probably did similar stuff when I did radio play by play, but my defense was always I'm doing it as a hobby/side gig and it was never my primary occupation.My favorite quote so far from this broadcast: "There's 3 Johnsons out there on the floor right now.. 2 for Akron and 1 for Bowling Green"

I wasn't paying attention with the "three Johnsons" line. Probably for the best as I would have needed a new keyboard had I been drinking something when I heard that line.

St. John's opening the Big East Tournament at MSG. Sounded like a Red Storm home game. Peacock/NBC gave the Big East Noah Eagle, which is kind of disappointing (but I also understand it).
A UConn/St. John's rematch Saturday night in the Garden would be pretty intense to watch. St. John's on its literal home court and UConn playing on its "second" home court (yes, I know they play in Storrs and in Hartford, but UConn always has a big following in NYC).

Puke is losing to GT.
I'm reminding myself to never be mad at a season Illinois finishes top four in the Big Ten. To not be playing on Thursday is quite an accomplishment that I took for granted last year.

Not only are they losing, they are getting housed early. Only 12 points after 16 minutes of play...yikes.

Well, I tune into the Duke/GT game and immediately Flagg goes down with an ankle problem. I truly hope that's not serious.
They had another leave the game with an arm injury I believe.

So far a "Duke has clinched a 1 seed, this tournament doesn't matter at all to them, just get to the real tournament healthy" effort.
That 1 seed may be in jeopardy. We might have a Kenyon Martin situation brewing.
