misery failure , again................

Asked how he’ll remember this season, Gates said: “I'm pretty difficult on myself. I'm hard on myself when it comes down to coaching. I don't think any coach could have brought the team to this place, based off of where we were, dealing with the injuries that we dealt with. So I pat myself on the back.

So for the second year in a row, no 13 through 16 seeds won. Curious what people think of that. I think it lessons the tournament and is one of the worst fallouts from portal/NIL. I love the David and Goliath aspect of the tournament, and hate to see it turned into Godzilla versus the gnat. While I know others look at it merely from a “TV programming” aspect — I don’t want to watch those games. My response to them is don’t watch, turn the channel, read a good book, whatever. Cuz to the players at those schools the NCAAT is not just TV programming, it’s a lifetime sports dream. And those upsets in the past were part of the foundation of the event’s growing popularity. Oh well.

I responded to a similar post yesterday by pointing out there have been plenty of tournaments with fewer upsets even before NIL/transfer portal (2007 Tournament for example did not have any 12-16 seeds advance). I get that everyone wants to blame everything they don't like on NIL/transfer portal, but I don't think the evidence is there yet. In 2023, also in the NIL/transfer portal era, we had a 16-seed, 15-seed, and 13-seed win, a 9-seed make the Final Four, and a championship game between a 4-seed and 5-seed. In 2024 an 11-seed made the Final Four.

The highest rated team in BT that lost was Wisconsin at 22. That means the top 21 teams are still in there among the 32 teams left.

The round 2 matchups (with chance to win):
1 vs 27 - 84%
2 vs 39 - 86%
3 vs 48 - 89%
4 vs 25 - 79%
5 vs 34 - 82%
6 vs 45 - 83%
7 vs 29 - 78%
8 vs 32 - 77%
9 vs 24 - 65%
10 vs 21 - 57%
11 vs 20 - 55%
12 vs 18 - 54%
13 vs 19 - 54%
14 vs 16 - 54%
15 vs 42 - 71%
17 vs 87 - 85%

Definitely a few coin flips in there, but there is a realistic scenario that when the sweet 16 is played, it involves all of the top 16 teams in basketball.

Uhm what conferences do SLU, VCU, and Utah St play for?
Yeah, Goodman is the worst.

And technically, Kentucky was a slight underdog by metrics yesterday, but it didn't exactly feel good to watch them to pull it out from nothing.

On Thursday, 5 of the 6 biggest toss-up games were won by the underdog, and one big underdog won (High Point).

But Thursday apparently doesn't exist for Goodman either.

This is what happens when you start from an assumption ("NIL is going to ruin upsets in the tournament") and then look for data to support that assumption.

We're not that far removed from one of the craziest tournaments in history (2023) which happened in the NIL-era. I mean, look at this list ESPN put out this year:

There have been two 16-over-1 upsets ever, and one happened during the NIL era. There have been eleven 15-over-1 upsets ever, and 3 of them happened during NIL.

It's entirely possible the last two seasons are part of some trend away from upsets, but honestly it's far more likely that they just happen to be years when there are fewer upsets, which has always been a thing that happens.

NIL and thus portal has been ramped up and the amount of money being spent has exploded the last two seasons. Seems like 3 years ago $1M payouts were news. Now the top money is what $5M? $10M? And teams have multiple players getting a $1M+. So yes, NIL and portal has been around for longer than 2 years, but the level has greatly increased.

Look at Oregon State. After the 2022-23 season, they had very few transfers out and none of their top players. The next year their two top players Jordan Pope and Bilodeau both leave. After last season, all 5 starters transferred out. And I’m fairly certain what has happened to the Beavers is not an isolated situation.

I'm sure many here knew this because there's a Chicago connection, but I had never bothered to Google what a billiken is before. Turns out its a fictional creature that was a popular toy/doll in the early 1900's. It's literally like if a team was named the St Louis Labubu's.
