They aren’t for profit. That changed 5+ years ago
ETA: they have a great home court with awesome fans as well
They tried. They failed. They continued operating like a for-profit institution so their attempt to change to non-profit was denied. Some agencies have recognized it but the Department of Education has not. They only wanted to get non-profit status so they wouldn't have to pay their tax bill.

I mean if the accrediting body and the IRS consider them a non-profit that’s good enough for me. Also my wife worked there and for her student loan forgiveness GCU is considered non-profit so the dept of education on some levels considers them non-profit.

They're a for-profit "Christian" school, so... pretty much this. They shouldn't have been allowed in the NCAA.
You are completely entitled to not like GCU (I personally don't like them either), but I don't understand the bolded. As long as the university is accredited and in good standing, who cares if it is "Christian" or considered for-profit? They should absolutely be allowed in NCAA. Now if they lost accreditation for most of their degrees, then I would agree.

I obviously don't have a problem with Christian schools in the NCAA. There are many of them. I do have a problem with for-profit institutions being allowed to propagandize on the biggest stage.
