It won’t still happen because a low or mid-major player that plays well as a FR/SO will be paid to go up to the high major level.

Also, you won’t see 13/14/15/16 seeds making upsets because they simply won’t have the paid talent to do it.

Before NIL, the playing field for all NCAA teams was theoretically fair. Each school could only pay scholarship. Now, it it’s not. If Illinois is paying 500,000 per starter, and Northern Iowa pays just their scholarship, I mean it’s as uneven as it’s ever been.
16-seeds only started making upsets in very recent history. This tournament has been chalky, but sometimes that happens with single-elimination tournaments and is supposed to happen as seeding should get more accurate with all the information at the committee's fingertips.

I think this looks at history with rose-colored glasses. Many teams were paying players under the table, with teams being held to different standards when caught. The same financial imbalance has always existed; instead of as much money directly going to players, it went to coaching staffs, facilities, travel accommodations, etc. Instead of using low/mid-majors as auditions for high-majors, players would just accept wasting their Fr/So years riding the bench at high-majors praying they get given a shot, and if they get recruited over, that's it for them.

He said that??? Interesting. Every time they showed that shot I counted three big steps.

Queen traveled. College isn’t much different than the NBA regarding traveling and that’s unfortunate. I counted three big steps

I didn't hear this explanation initially (only heard when he was asked about it by Jalen Rose during the multitude of stoppages in the 2nd half of Oregon/Zona) but this was his explanation for why he didn't consider a travel with the way the rule is written:

He catches his last dribble when his right foot is down by the free throw line. Then takes 2 steps.

Here is his last dribble. Right foot in air.

Two steps from there.
I don't remeber who they bring in during these games but he is the reffing analyst. He said that second photo, Queen does not have control right here. His steps don't count until he fully gains control.

Just an observation but I think NIL has killed the NCAA Cinderella chances. When you got major teams paying real salaries, and mid major teams paying very little if any, the talent discrepancy is going to become more and more apparent. Which sucks for the NCAA tourney.
I think it may be more the advanced metrics used to pair the teams. In 2021, the committee ignored the NET when putting top ten Loyola as an 8/9 in our bracket. UConn was the only such discrepancy this time around and they gave #1 Florida a heckuva game.

If Maryland ends up winning this game, I wouldn't be surprised if they ended up staying on the west coast this week. No point in flying all the way back to College Park when you'd have to turn around and fly back to San Francisco for their regional semifinal on Thursday.
Maryland Board of Trustees has approved the Warfield
