A discussion I had with someone today about loving your team and the dislike/ hatred you have for rivals.
If you knew there was a 0% chance Illinois wins the title would you rather
A) Lose to Uconn but Purdue also loses before the final 4. Or
B) Make it to the title game but lose to Purdue for the 3rd time and have to watch them celebrate and deal with their fans always having that game over us?
I'll go with option C) Win the national title after Purdue loses to Tennessee (y)

A) A million times over. B) Would induce homicidal rage. And that would be a PU game I couldn't boycott so it would be double torture.

What if the 3rd option is to beat Purdue in the championship game? Worth the risk?

That's wild that a scholarshiped and NIL benefited athlete is playing intramural football.
10th Floor Oglesby beat a team of UofI football players for the all university basketball championship in 1973 school year. I got a busted pair of glasses and a split lip from a ball that Chubby Phillips threw at a ref but missed.

B is an absolute nightmare scenario as I have many Purdue relatives. A is an easy choice for me.

If you up option B to a 25% chance to win that's worth rolling the dice, otherwise I'm A. Part of it is that our programs are so similar. If this was Indiana, who already has a handful of championships, the equation is different. I just don't want them to get their first before us, and beating us to do so no less.

Subpar SOS
Multiple blowout losses
Lost to Kansas who we beat

They're the best team in CBB, but we can hang
most certainly

but we will need to play our best game of the season to beat them.
Its possible , but we will need at least 3 guys to have good nights shooting the ball
we need to score at least 80 points

Just to add some context...

They played Kansas on the road while missing a lottery pick.

Clingan only played 14 minutes in the loss at Seton Hall because he sprained his ankle.

Of course we *can* beat them, but we'll likely have to play our absolute best game of the season. There's just very little margin for error.

I really don’t fear Purdue in a rematch- we led for over 30 minutes in our last game against them and TSJ was a no-show in the second half and had his worst game of the year

Since then, TSJ has been the best player in college basketball- I would like our chances

I'm open to possibilities of us maybe getting a break or two in this game as well. Maybe some calls go our way, maybe they have guys sit early with foul trouble, maybe this, maybe that.

It's cool if we want to make excuses for them losing by 20 points but we don't think any breaks are going to go our way?

I understand the fear and anxiety lot of our fanbase is experiencing, but while I understand it, I don't share it. I think this will be a close game and we will have a chance to win.

I'm also prepared to be wrong.

I'm not making excuses. I'm providing context in the same way I would if someone brought us up losing at home to Maryland, but didn't mention us missing TSJ.

Just because you don't share a fear of one of the best teams of the last 20 years doesn't make you right and everyone else wrong though.

They haven't lost a game to a nonconference opponent in 2 years, including wins over UNC and Gonzaga this year.

That said, they had a ridiculously easy path to the national title last year. We're better than any team they faced in the tournament last year or this year. I expect us to give them hell and yes, if a few things break our way AND we will play very well, we can win this game.

I didnt say anyone was wrong, in fact I said "I understand it".

They shouldn't have lost in the non conference this year. Their non conf SOS was like 283rd.

They're the best team in CBB. Is your argument that we have no chance at winning this game? Because thats the only way you and I are going to disagree on amything here.

For the life of me I cannot understand this line of thinking from the other thread saying to root for Purdue so the conference looks better. We want Purdue to lose, period. The sooner the better.

We want the easiest path to the championship should we get past UConn. And for all that is holy I do not want those Frankenmakers getting a championship before we do. And please don’t bring up 70 years ago, I’m talking the modern tournament.
If we make it past UCONN, there's no way in hell I'm at all concerned about who we play. Especially Purdue in a third game which would basically be a reverse '89.
