If we make it past UCONN, there's no way in hell I'm at all concerned about who we play. Especially Purdue in a third game which would basically be a reverse '89.
Wish I shared your feeling.

People talk on here (not just you) like the third game is an auto-win for the team that has lost two already. There's no backing for that, and somebody posted the research here some months back.

And I want no part of watching Edey get Sean May calls all game AGAIN. I'm not over Sean May getting Sean May calls.

First let's beat UConn. One game.

10th Floor Oglesby beat a team of UofI football players for the all university basketball championship in 1973 school year. I got a busted pair of glasses and a split lip froCall m a ball that Chubby Phillips threw at a ref but missed.
You mean "Penthouse." Surely they still used that name in '73. If you were on that floor in '71 or '72 Cropper or I probably bought you booze. I drove a '69 Mach 1. Wasn't '73 the year the guys got caught relocating the pig from south farms to Trelease?

Pretty much comes down to Domask, Hawkins, and Shannon
If one of those three is held down (eg. Domask kept out of the paint) someone os going to have rise to the occasion.
At times this season we have seen members of this team rise up to lead the team to victory
When this team is functioning on all five cylinders it is almost unstoppable

Just to add some context...

They played Kansas on the road while missing a lottery pick.

Clingan only played 14 minutes in the loss at Seton Hall because he sprained his ankle.

Of course we *can* beat them, but we'll likely have to play our absolute best game of the season. There's just very little margin for error.
Sounds like a lot of excuses to me. They got beat in those two games. Plain and simple.

So much for the Big 12 being dominant this year. Purdue and Illinois are showing they were far and away the best two teams in the B1G.

Only guarantee is that ACC will have at least 1 team in Final Four.
The Big XII took the role of tourney-fodder from the B1G. Happy to give that role up. Go Illini.

We could be 1989 Michigan, and PU could be ‘89 Illinois… 🏆
Yes except if the hypothetical were to play out for real…we would now be coached by Chester Frazier or TA and Underwood would have left to coach at say UNLV.
(Frieder-ASU)

So I’m not crazy about that part of it. ;)

Y’all are quite literal today… I love it! 😁

I was mostly marching to the ‘hard to beat thrice” drumbeat, but whatevs…

Ernie just said it, man… 11 years since the overall #1 seed won it. The NCAA Tournament isn’t about the best team, it’s about the hottest team, mixed with luck, and sometimes just the best player. Let’s go!

(Also, my Lordy, Louisville has fallen from that overall #1 champion seat)

I can’t bring myself to watch the pregame. I’ll probably just fume at the UConn love. Watching the Iowa women boat race Colorado by 30. Surprised that Clark is still in the game.

I haven't watched any of it. I don't care. Just give me the game.

Glad I’m all the highlights they keep showing that technical (uncalled of course)… of Edey hanging on the rim and staring down his opponent. SMH…..

No shot I'm watching any more games this round. Might not watch any more this tourney.
I'm usually 1000 percent in your boat after an Illini season-ender but for whatever reason I don't feel quite like that this year. I guess the happiness of just having Illinois finally back playing this late in the tournament outweighs the disappointment of tonight.

And watching Bama-Clemson just makes me wish again we would have been in any region besides UConn's.

Agree with this. I barely watched the past few tournaments because we were out so early. I watched the Final Four a couple of years ago when Kansas won it because they were mostly good games. I'm a little more invested this year because of how far we went.

Bama vs UCONN

Even though we didn’t make the final 4 we had a final four caliber team and could have made it in UNC and UH bracket (minus their star)

Hard to believe Illinois is 0-6 against 1 seeds

This tournament is UCONN’s until shown otherwise

Sears and company will have to go on a heater to have a chance next week. Sears hit 7 threes tonight, and the team had 16 total made threes. They will need to replicate that effort, and even that may not be enough.

UConn is going to win by 50.

They are likely going to get boat raced-although at least UConn won't be playing a home game which could help a little bit

A poster on The Boneyard has a theory the Committee flat out did NOT want the TSJ story at the Final Four so did their best to ensure that didn't happen by putting Illinois in UConn's bracket...

That's the most sour grapes story I've heard in a while. They played very well, got the shots they wanted and made them. We couldn't throw it in the ocean. End of story.

The post I referenced happened the day after our Sweet 16 win and well before last night's game.
