False. Merrimack is ineligible for the tournament.

I do not understand why a team who used to be DII cannot be immediately eligible for Tournament?

Does anyone have a reasonable answer?
I think it's a dumb rule, but here's what the NCAA says:

Eleven schools, including Merrimack, are currently in some phase of moving to Division I and subject to the decades-old transition rule. But why isn’t a team good enough to win its conference tournament allowed to compete in the sport’s biggest event? The rationale for the rule, an N.C.A.A. spokeswoman said in an email, is to allow those schools to get to Division I standards for facilities, scholarship requirements and other aspects of their athletic programs.

“Originally, N.C.A.A. members in Division I instituted a two-year process for reclassification, but that was doubled when teams began to make the jump and were unable to sustain Division I membership because they made the move too soon and could not keep up financially,” the spokeswoman, Meghan Durham, said. “It’s meant to protect universities from taking on more expense than they can handle.”

How does letting the team participate as a 16 or 15 seed in the dance affect whether the school has tried to go too fast in transitioning from DII to DI?

Can someone explain the logic there? Like does making the tourney make universities try to go faster?

My understanding is that there are some substantial expenses in transporting the team, support staff, etc., putting them in hotel rooms, arranging for meals and so forth, and some DIAs may not have built up the resources (staff, boosters & money) to make this happen in the timeframe necessary to get a team to Dayton on Tuesday or to a regional location on Thursday or Friday.

In the past someone would always post here letting us know who to root for and against from an Illini perspective. Is it as simple as root for the Badgers today? I was surprised to see OSU at -118

I'm no expert, but looking at today's schedule, my thoughts are as follows on what we want:

- Syracuse over Wake Forest to help our win over Cuse
- Wisconsin to beat tOSU so our wins look better. Also tOSU is safely a Q1 loss I believe barring a surprise.
- Nebraska over MN so our win looks better

I don't see anything else today that would directly impact our resume, but someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

In terms of improving and maintaining our Q1 wins/losses, we want to root for Michigan St., Missouri, and Wisconsin. I'm pretty sure all of the other teams we've played are far enough from the thresholds (in either direction) that their results won't change our quad records. Then we probably want to root against teams projected to be seeded in the 7-9 range to improve our chances of getting out of the 8/9 game. Unfortunately, both Michigan St. and Missouri are in this range, but I suspect it's better to root for them, given our unimpressive Q1 record. So we want to root against Arkansas, Auburn, Duke, FAU, Iowa, Maryland, Memphis, Northwestern, and West Virginia.

Today:
Texas Tech over West Virginia
Wisconsin over Ohio St.

Thursday:
Arkansas over Auburn (we want both to lose, but obviously one more than the other)
Georgia Tech/Pittsburgh over Duke
Ohio St./Wisconsin over Iowa
Minnesota/Nebraska over Maryland
UTEP/Western Kentucky over FAU

Friday:
Michigan St. over Iowa/Ohio St./Wisconsin
Missouri over Mississippi/South Carolina/Tennessee
SMU/UCF over Memphis

I did an internship at North Florida as they were beginning their transition to D1. As alluded to, there's a lot more to it than simply whether or not the teams can compete on the field/court.

I feel like the actual mistake is allowing Merrimack to play in the conference tournament in the first place, which is a conference decision rather than NCAA.

Someone should start a gofundme.

Do teams in the Tourney collect a portion of ticket revenue? Is that a stupid question?
I feel like being in the Tourney would be nothing but positive cash flow...

We have our first two BTT games tonight. I'm putting the NET rankings as well as seeds, as they are relevant to our resume!

5:30 pm: (13) #63 Ohio State vs. (12) #78 Wisconsin
8:00 pm: (14) #231 Minnesota vs. (11) #92 Nebraska

For our Illini's sake, it would be MARVELOUS if Wisconsin could win tonight and then upset Iowa tomorrow. First, it's just funny when Iowa loses. Second, I think those two wins would get Wisconsin into the top 75, giving us both another Quad 2 AND another Quad 1 win. On that same note, the computers are obsessed with OSU for some reason, so I don't think a neutral court loss to Wisconsin would drop them more than twelve spots.

The second game doesn't really matter, but I feel bad for whoever has to face Nebraska. They're dangerously close to being a Quad 3 loss on a neutral floor, and they are NOT playing like it!

I think our dream results for the next couple of days (outside of the Illini) are these:

(1) Wisconsin beats OSU, beats Iowa and loses to Michigan State. This leads to Wisconsin getting back into the top 75 (from #78) and Michigan State getting back into the top 30 (from #31), giving us two more Quad 1 wins and another Quad 2 win.

(2) Rutgers gets its act together and bounces back for a win over Michigan. Not only do I REALLY not want to take the chance Michigan has another crap year and sneaks into the Sweet Sixteen, RU has strangely had Purdue's number this year. I think there is next to zero chance that the current iteration of Rutgers Basketball defeats Purdue, but hey - you never know! If they somehow did, it would not only knock out a very tough Purdue team from this tournament, but it might get Rutgers into the top 30 (from #42), getting us another Quad 1 win.

(3) Regardless of resume, one of Maryland, Nebraska or Minnesota beats Indiana so that we can all laugh at IU and we can have an even bigger homecourt advantage if we make it to Saturday.
