The decision definitely contributed to Michigan trying to game the outcome. Michigan played the B1G.
Yes, Scum gamed the system. They saw thru the glaring loophole and did all they could to take advantage. The crap thing about all of it is that not one member of the team or staff had Covid. Their duplicitous action paid the dividend that they sought: a Big Ten Basketball Championship.

Man that truly "heart-felt" response almost made me want to cry for the Players and Coaches alike , it just goes to show with people in higher and the right career leverage do care as they should knowing this was not a every now and thing when someone works hard to only be rewarded from it....and to be "tossed" like a salad.
Great letter for all to resonate together and common goals of accomplishment is being very well recognized to everyone who earned The University of Illinois Men`s basketball team accomplishments this season thus far (much more to prove moving forward) - to all Coaches and Players...
Time to move on now more then ever and You will always be remembered ..
Let`s go cut a few more nets down starting this weekend !!!! Proof is in the Pudding and just go prove it.....

Great letter by Josh, but in the end, like he says, the only recourse is to win. And keep winning. And then win some more. Add this to the slights that Illinois continues to receive, even from their own conference. The only way to reverse it is to reverse the still-too-recent perception of our athletics programs as also rans. Hopefully, this just adds fuel to the competitive fire of not only the team, but to our AD to continue his great efforts to lift both major revenue programs out of the depths. I'm glad he is our AD!

Did Josh Whitman write that or JFGsCoffeeMug?

Seriously, that is some letter. I wonder if any other Big Ten AD has done something like that when they felt slighted? Sounds like there will be some kind of banner going up. Will be interesting to see what exactly it says.
I read that as we expect to get another banner (or 2) going up. But that IF we don’t win one of those 2 they’ll hang something. If that’s the case then I hope we get those other banners, as much as I’d love to see what they’d write on this one.

Just got home and read the letter. Reaction: "Well, yeah."

As I wrote Sunday evening here, Kevin Warren piled a heap of dry kindling on Illini-orange hot coals. I wonder how that's gonna end up for him Sunday around 6 p.m. ET.

I've been waiting years to flip our meme-of-long-suffering on its head:

great letter, and i agree with virtually everything he says. But, i hate to say it, there is one glaring issue (quote below). I didn't know this was agreed to beforehand. Not sure why you would agree that winning %age is the metric upfront. I think there was a reasonable enough chance that not all teams would play the same # of games that the scenario we're in right now was possible. Seems short-sighted to not object earlier.

To be clear, just because they were short-sighted then doesn't justify being short-sighted now. Given the world we've been in for the past year, i think it's entirely fair to be flexible and be willing to adjust to circumstances. But the quote below makes that argument more difficult to make.

Nonetheless, I agree with the sentiment, esp towards the end. just go out and prove them wrong on the court. :illinois:

"In November, the conference agreed that winning percentage would be used to determine the regular-season champion in basketball. At the time, we stared into an uncertain future, not knowing how many games teams would be able to play."
Just because it was “agreed” doesn’t mean it was unanimous. I’d be curious what that vote looked like

It was shortsighted and clearly advantages those teams that play fewer games, particularly those (like Michigan) that started the season really hot. But I appreciate that Josh stated the facts and didn't try to avoid saying this truth. It makes the rest of the letter, along with his argument, much more trustworthy. I also don't think it detracts from his argument, given the facts about teams' willingness -- or lack thereof, in Michigan's case -- to make up games.

Man, I had moved on from being upset about this and was focusing solely on the upcoming tourneys, but after (re-)reading all the events/circumstances in that letter I am pi**ed again!! The most damning part is Michigan's (and really the B1G's) lack of urgency in making up their games while we operated on a very compressed schedule...to actually play all our games. That is indefensible. Michigan/B1G can point to the agreement in Nov. all they want in justifying this outcome, but it is undeniable that they operated slowly to protect their lead in the standings.

Another poor decision lacking in transparency from Warren, but this one antagonizes a huge fan base with a long, loooooonnnnggg memory, a good chunk of whom live in the same city as the B1G headquarters. Have fun dealing with that. As far as I'm concerned, his reputation as commissioner is irretrievably sullied. I look forward to castigating him any chance I can get.

Our only recourse is to demolish Michigan (again) in the BTT. Then, hope we both have a nice little run to the Final Four, where we meet again 32 years later and utterly humiliate them in a historically lopsided game with so many embarrassing video clips that Twitter is trending with "Hail to the Vanquished" for 3 weeks straight and Howard breaks down in tears in the postgame interview, leading Caleb Houstan and Moussa Diabate to decide they had better go play for the G League Elite rather than wear a Michigan uniform.

So may it be.

technically not
BT CHAMPIONS 2021
even though we finished 0.5 games ahead of (and beat the snot out of) Michigan.

My modest suggestion for a banner.
but with the middle font twice as big as that.

Hopefully a real deep run in the dance will make this moot.

How many times is Illinois going to get screwed over by the Big Ten and the NCAA?

* The regional final against Kentucky being played on Kentucky's home court, which led to a rule change
* The excessively harsh penalties for minor recruiting infractions because of the Deon Thomas investigation
* The Michigan fumble game in football that led to the use of instant replay in Big Ten games
* The blown out-of-bounds ball against Miami in the NCAA tournament that led to a rule change

And now getting jobbed out of a conference championship in basketball after they had changed the rule for tOSU in football at the end of the season, but wouldn't do likewise for Illinois. It's absolutely maddening
I will never forget that krap at Kentucky!

To be fair, KY beat IL in Champaign by two or so that December; ILL lost to KY on its home court in an Elite 8 game! C'mon. What krap. And the krap continues.

Just keep winning, Illinois!

Illini are wrong here. Hate to go against the flow. Plus we look like whiners and people that haven’t been there before. Regular season big 10 is irrelevant. Only possible upside is maybe firing us up for post season with the ole chip on the shoulder. If that’s what he’s doing then josh is brilliant. Otherwise it’s kind of embarrassing.
