This is out of a Yahoo sports article that came out today:

“Miller, it was revealed via pretrial testimony by a Tuscaloosa detective, drove to the scene with a firearm belonging to Miles in the backseat of the car. Miller arrived soon after receiving a text message from Miles stating “I need my joint [gun]” and using slang to describe that some level of dispute was underway.

The bold is interesting. It’s the first I’ve seen somebody write about more of the dialogue besides “I want my gun”. (Paraphrasing) If there was an indication of an argument/dispute used in the same few texts as wanting the gun, (and that’s a big if, none of this is necessarily fact) then it makes Miller’s decision that much worse and Bama’s decision to let it all go and hope for the best look awful.

We already know:
-It’s around midnight
-Friend has texted asking for the gun
-High likelihood friend is inebriated in some way (Miller did drop them off at a bar)

That’s already grounds to say Miller should be punished by the coach/school for a lack of good judgement. Add “-Friend mentioned a dispute/argument/situation at the same time that he asked for the gun” and the floor drops out.

I pray for Ms Harris’ little boy and their family.

Yeah I had been sure he thought he was asked to bring it because there was a grizzly spotted nearby

I believe that was in the defense attorney’s statement. Also, Miller was on his way to small group and had just finished up his stint at the local soup kitchen.

I jest. Obviously this whole thing is no laughing matter. But the absurdity of Alabama’s “Let it ride!” mentality has brought my sarcasm out.

If there were bears and wolves all around your home you might feel differently. If food was 3 times as expensive because it is basically imported from elsewhere you would probably hunt. I'm not from Alaska, but I read. Alaskaillini could tell us more if he feels like it.
I'm a pretty big believer in firearms restrictions generally and not interested in debating it. However, I dated a woman from Fairbanks (her dad was a pipeline worker and mom was a bush pilot, so about as Alaskan as you get) and having spent just a little bit of time in central Alaska in the middle of winter, I would own multiple firearms if I lived there, absolutely.
It's a unique type of remoteness.

Thanks, Illinitiger, for the link. Jason Whitlock is a very calm speaking insightful person. He is making a point about culture that makes for a very difficult reasoned discussion. Emotions flair and preconceived ideas define arguments. I have a family full of grandchildren that don't look like me so I have a perspective that appreciates how Jason Whitlock frames his point of view.

Whitlock hasn't been taken seriously as a commentator on issues in years, especially recently.

Why isn't Miller being charged with a violation of this law? It's not murder, but it is crime. I don't see any requirement of intent here.

It could be that any laws he broke due to his possession of the weapon at all are being waived to get over the top cooperation. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Additionally, his possession was more than a little accidental. He possessed the gun without ever seeing or touching it. And he may not have known it was loaded until a few minutes before arriving at the Strip.

Wow…I don’t know what to say.

You’d think they’d want to distance themselves from the entire thing in every way possible.

Just…wow.

Please tell me that was his standard starting lineup ritual long before this all happened.
Not trying to be a jerk... But even if it was does it really matter?

Kid may be legally innocent, but at best he's a moron and at worst he's an accomplice to a murder who is not getting charged because of lawyer speak.

He's not getting charged because the cops can't find anything that the DA thinks would stick.

The lawyer speak is to make sure NBA teams don't think he's as much of a risk

Last year when we did our extended family NCAA basketball poll (we add some pretty creative stuff), my brother-in-law and I had 5 particular coaches we rooted against: Pearl, Calipari, Self, Sampson, and Wade. We had to explain that to several other family members. I will replace Wade with Oats this year.
