Alan Griffin transfers to Syracuse

If griffin goes to Duke he won’t see the floor. This decision is super odd, he was a great fit in this offense. Have another really goood year and he could have tested the waters. Nba is all about shooters, he has the ability to rebound and shoot the three well. This sucks but we will move on.
So he has the ability to be a great player for us, a team many are/were pretty high on for 2020, and you think he could test the NBA waters in a year, but he won't see the floor at Duke if that's where he decides to go?

I get the sarcasm at Alan playing the point here (We have Trent and Curbelo) but don’t think it is as far out as some think to play it elsewhere. If you look at the improvement he made from 1 to 2nd year you realize he is not afraid to work to accomplish his goals. Would think that position would give him more of a chance to make it to the NBA and probably can find a team to give him that opportunity. Is a case where his goals and Illini team goals don’t match. Best of luck to him!

Basically a 1-1 TO ratio to Assists with very limited ball handling, and certainly not against the heaviest of pressure when he did have it in his hands? I really am not sure if there is merit to the whole "wanna play PG" stance, if there is well not quite sure what to make of it. Alan is not a PG nor does he have those abilities in my eyes...at least not PRO caliber. Could he work to get better in PG areas needed, sure, PRO level better?

The way he dribbles the ball in the open court always had me afraid someone would swipe at it from behind, such a weird, long dribble action.
There’s a lot to being a point guard. Obviously, great handles are required, but great decision making is every bit as important. When I watched Griffin with the ball in the open court, I couldn’t help thinking he couldn’t get rid of it fast enough.

Yeah, you pretty much just quoted my entire post.

Down to Miami, Syracuse, Dayton, Iowa State, Arizona and Texas per Rothstein... I could live with Syracuse or Dayton. Watch him go to Syracuse and we draw them in the ACC/B1G challenge.

If I was him I’d go to Syracuse. Be one of those long 6’5 guys at the top of the zone who can get out in transition (read: ball can be in his hands since that seems to be what he wants) to attack or hit a 3. He also brings a great rebounding presence which is huge for a zone team. I feel like Syracuse has also been lacking knock down shooters lately, so he helps their half court offense to boot.

Disclaimer: I am biased. Syracuse has always been my second favorite after the Illini because I love how active they are in their zone and how it just befuddles people.

AG's man defense was so-so, but I could really see him shining in a Syracuse zone. I am not a Syracuse fan, but it seems to make sense for him.

Won't Boeheim have 2 of his kids on the team - good luck getting playing time. I think Buddy probably averaged 35 or so mins. Jimmy is going to focus on doing what is necc. to get his kids to a league somewhere.

A lot of people I know at Dayton think it's a done deal that he is coming.

Grant isn't likely to hop to a major job this year and he thinks AG would be a great fit.

You should have seen the list of AG transfer reasons off of a premium site that got posted on a another free site. It was very creative. :) The sad part is people believe that cr*p.

I just don't bother with premium sites. I'd rather get rampant speculation with a kernel of truth for free than rampant speculation with two kernels of truth for a price. Plus, even if people like Piper get the absolute most up to date info, recruiting situations change so fast that said info is near valueless in a lot of instances (see: Cliffmas). Nah, I'll stick with my wild rumors and leaks.

I don't want him killing us, which I suspect would happen, because we're Illinois, right? And also, he's liable to have strong seasons: I'd much rather it be with a non-conference school.
Fair. I was curious why you feel a lot better about him leaving now?

I hate that he's leaving. He had a VG soph season, made a huge leap forward. But I'm a free will guy, so I'm ok (more or less, lol) with kids leaving for a better situation. Just was dubious that Griffin would make a good call there. And I flippin' hated the possibility that he'd transfer to a B10 school.

AG was not going to start because Underwood would start Williams, even though Williams is not a starter.
AG worked his butt off and it showed in games. He scrapped, rebounded, and was basically our only 3 pt maker, but
he was put in only when the Illini offense ground to zero.

Even with AG and Ayo, without Kofi, the illini would have had a losing record and Coach Underwood's job would have been tenious.
Coach Underwood should have started AG and AG would have stuck around. I would be leaving too if I had that amount of
talent and sat.

Now that AG is leaving, Coach had better recruit some real players who can make shots, not just shoot.

Considering how well the team played , its hard to criticize how players were used. It made sense to bring scoring off the bench. If AG was starting, where would he get shot opportunities?

Griffin was a valuable part of the team, but his defensive lapses kept him off the court especially late in games. If he played DMW defense he would have been the starter. He wasn’t a bad defender, but he wasn’t disciplined enough. MSU game is a perfect example. I wish he was staying, but that ship has sailed. I’m excited to see who they bring in to take his place.
