I don't think free transfers + NIL = good for college sports or fans.

If NIL is here to stay, and I would say it definitely is, then this ability to transfer freely has to end. There is little benefit and way more negatives for the colleges and staffs. Now they have to recruit players non-stop when they are in high school....and then recruit them all over again every year. Its not sustainable.

He had his issues with valuing the ball at times but he also had a ton of experience in pressure situations. We will need a portal transfer of equal experience and talent. Not guaranteed.

I literally just came here for my daily check-in after watching this video:


I am bummed by Belo's leaving us. This past year must have been incredibly difficult for him. I hope he fully recovers from the injuries and goes on to have an outstanding career at whatever stops await him. I don't know him personally, but I get the feeling that he is an upstanding young man who has his head screwed on straight. I hope that whatever school is lucky enough to land him next fully appreciates their good fortune.

Belo will always be among my top all time “what if” players. How would it be different if we took away Covid and the concussion? Dwelling on things you can’t control is usually a waste of time but this one will linger. Wish the kid all the best and hope he gets healthy all around, bball aside. Kid had a ridiculously tough year.

Yeah we like to say ‘flashes’ of brilliance but not many players can boast an 8 minute highlight reel for one year in the B1G. I was and still am a huge Belo fan.

I agree. I bet he becomes the "one that got away," and after a fresh start makes us all jealous that he reached his potential somewhere other than the O&B. I'll be rooting for him. I, too, hope he completely kills it and silences the naysayers. Will always wish he could have done it here...

Huge loss for sure. Injuries hurt his performance big time this year, perhaps he should have just redshirted and got well. I think the Illini team will miss his enormous talent. Wish him good health and luck where ever he goes!

I’m a big fan of Belo. Hope he’s an AA and national runner up (with the beloved Illini winning it all of course).

On the plus side, the one free transfer rule does somewhat mitigate this. You better think long and hard about your next destination because it's likely to be a pain in the rear to go through the rodeo again.

I hope he gets healthy and gets the off-the-court stuff figured out because when he does, he'll be a great player. I wish him the best.

I thought BU gave him a long leash to show his creativity. Some games it took a few mistakes and then there were a lot of special plays. Other times the magic never happened. He was at his best when he allowed other players make the plays with his passes

Wherever he goes he needs a team that will support his style of play

I remain convinced this was a lot more negatively serious incident than we have heard details about.

Sad to hear, I’ll miss his electric talents. Wishing him all the best and he’s always welcome back as an Illini BigTen champ….

I think the recruiting sites are kicking their chops as their “coverage” essentially doubled with the new transfer rules and NIL impacts. I hope college hoops doesn’t lose its unique emotional allure…my dad still watches all his alma mater’s games and follows them closely into his 80s.

Would expect to see something like this on April 1 as a clever prank. Seeing today is not enjoyable. Belo was so much fun to watch. Going to really sting if he gets on track and realizes his potential elsewhere. That said, appreciate all he did for us and wish him all the best

He was his best when he wasn't dealing with what likely could (should?) have been a season ending injury.

People forget his ludicrous productivity in the latter part of last season and only look at his struggles after injury this season.

This is not a minor loss, even if it ends up being best for both parties.

I hate to see Belo go, but he has to do what he thinks is right for him now. He is probably the only transfer out that I will root for without hesitation. Even if we play his team, I hope he has a spectacular game that the Illini win. What a talent!

There are as many reasons to be a fan of a Team as there are the number of fans. There is a likewise number of reasons why a fan might lose interest.

For me, being a fan is a Two-Way Street. First of all, you have to get something out of it or you wouldn’t be a fan of that team. You forge some kind of personal connective narrative. But as you offer your time and interest and money to a Team... They need to respond in kind with trying to be very successful and treating you as a fan with respect. As we know, it starts at the very top of an organization and filters its way down to the game time product.

Most all Teams except for a tiny few will move-and-down the charts with the changing fates of recruiting and the coaching profession. But it is the fans interest that keeps things level – again, as long as the Organization is trying its best. If and when They don’t do that it’s hard to find a reason for fans to keep pouring interest into the Team.

Players and Coaches will always be a revolving door. It is the passing on of interest in a Team from generation to generation that is the heart and soul of the sports relationship.

That’s one reason why Illini Nation is so optimistic these days. Even though the last two years have given us little to be happy about in the Tournament, we sense that the right guys are at the wheel and we see the on-court product getting better overall. And 'Our Team' is getting some National recognition again.

We give them our passion and They work hard and get better and reward us with their best efforts. That’s how it is supposed to work.

I also would love to know about the Houston half-time debacle with Belo. Anyone well informed on that? ;)

I'm excited to move on and hopefully get Clark into the fold.

I've never had a super high threshold for guys who swing so wildly moment to moment on the court. I'd rather have more steak than sizzle. More solid than momentarily spectacular.

I'm impressed by Clark's film, he can shoot it, handle, drive, and dish.

I wish Belo luck wherever he lands. I hope he puts it all together and does amazing. No ill will at all.
