Austin Hutcherson out for season

BU just said on the radio pregame interview that Hutcherson is out for the season with a sports hernia and will have surgery soon.......

Good lord. That poor guy can’t catch a break going back to his original accident. Surgery sounds like this has been a problem. Wish him the best. Almost Dudek like in that he can’t stay healthy no matter how hard he works.

I'm pretty sure he still has eligibility left. Not sure if he can use another medical redshirt, but he can apply for some sort of waiver I believe.

If he was eligible this year he should be eligible next year. But was his scholarship committed elsewhere?

But really I am absolutely gutted for the kid. The staff had such high hopes for him and knowing that he won’t reach his potential is a tough pill to swallow.

I think he sat out one season due to the old transfer rule. Iirc, he had yet to use a medical waiver. Plus, he could still use the free covid year. That would give him two more seasons.

Sad news....but I hope that Austin knows that every Illini fan is in his corner, not to mention those many teammates, coaches and fans he has touched in his life. As much as anyone, I fully understand having dreams that seemed fully in reach thwarted by fate beyond one's control. Without a doubt, we all hope also that he can return and enjoy a full season of competition with his teammates and coaches to whom he has given so much for so little. I feel AH will someday come to realize the truth behind the old saying that " what does not kill you, only makes you stronger". Meantime, he has thousands of well wishers wishing him only the best and that he goes on to a fulfilling life regardless of his past and current travails.
