Yes, it’s a point system. You get 3 point for 1st team, 2 points for 2nd, and 1 point for 3rd.

He currently has 4 points (two 2nd teams). Last year, it took 7 points to be consensus, which is what’s required to join the rafters.

Using 7 points as the baseline, if he’s 2nd team and 3rd team in the final two, he would get rafters.

AJ D from BYU is just lazy by the voters. Did he really impact winning like Keaton did? For the majority of the season, Keaton accomplished much more than AJ did, but has tuckered out a bit towards the end, while AJ is coming on stronger now than he did early on. But still, as an integral piece to the team, Keaton was much more impactful.
I for sure think you could justify voting for Wagler above Dybantsa, but I don't think that means voting for Dybantsa is unjustifiable or lazy. There are a lot of reasons you can easily justify Dybantsa as 1st Team. He is the leading scorer in the nation (both total and per game). Also averaged 6.7 reb per game (4.8 for Wagler) and 3.8 assists per game (4.4 for Wagler).

Though Wagler has better 3pt% numbers, Dybantsa is still a good 3pt shooter, particularly for his size, and has a very slight edge in eFG% due to his superior percentages from two. And they actually have the exact same TS%.

I think when you get to more advanced stats you see Wagler and Dybantsa looking a lot closer particularly when it comes to scoring ability, but I think Dybantsa still slightly edges out Wagler in those, and clearly has an edge in the traditional stats, especially in points which is a stat that's going to loom large for voters.

And as for "impacting winning" they are both clearly the best player on their team. It's hard to quantify this, but one stat that tries to is Win Shares. Both Dybantsa and Wagler have 6.2 Win Shares each according to Sports Reference, which ties them for #6 in the nation (and puts Bruce Thornton and Aiden Kehoe above them so big grain on salt on that metric). Another "value" stat is Box Plus Minus where Keaton has an ever so slight lead (12.0 to 11.8 according to Sports Reference and 10.8 vs 10.2 according to Torvik). But then in that stat neither is top-10 so not a great hat to hang the "Keaton should be First Team" argument.

TSJ was an exception, you gotta love Whitman. "Obviously he doesn't meet the objective criteria that we have outlined for consideration with the jersey program, but I think we all recognize that without question that Terrence was one of the top 10 players in America this year; probably one of the top two or three players in America. He had one of the greatest single seasons in the history of Illinois Basketball. Arguably, the greatest season in the history of Illinois Basketball. We all understand that there were, now, factors beyond his control that prevented those votes from being where they needed to be in order for him to satisfy the criteria, and we're happy to make an exception in this case to recognize one of the great players that our program has ever seen."

Players selected to have their jerseys hung must have achieved any of the following criteria:
1) National Player of the Year
2) Enshrined in the National Basketball Hall of Fame
3) Big Ten Player of the Year
4) Consensus First- or Second-Team All-American
5) Illinois All-Century Team Member
6) Individual whose pioneering efforts made a significant impact on Illinois and international basketball

Are those criteria necessary but not sufficient, or are they necessary and sufficient? I.E. is jersey retirement automatic upon reaching the criteria or is it possible/have there been cases where someone met the criteria and did not get the jersey retired?

It's not jersey retirement, it's just "Honored Numbers." The number is not retired. Notice that the #25 is up there 4 times, Ayo wore Dee's number (who wore Don Sunderlage's number), and Mirk is wearing TSJ's number.

I think technically it is only sufficient, but as far as I know nobody has been denied. The program wants to do this. The only reason they wouldn't is if it turns out the player did something horrible (like cannibalism or something) and the program/university wants to distance itself from association. If Wagler meets the criteria there is a 0% chance they would not hang his jersey.

Also, if the school chooses to honor an athlete who has not met the above criteria, said athlete must have his jersey unveiled upside-down.

And what could be considered/confused for always sunny references in their user names...
Confused, in my case, as much as I love Always Sunny.

My name is entirely a product of my brain making connections between four specific memories/events/facts:

1. Being a senior in Champaign the year that Juice led us to a win over OSU and a Rose Bowl berth;
2. That shortly thereafter, sometime in 2008, the rapper OJ da Juiceman came out with his hit single "Make the Trap Say Eh";
3. That a play exists called The Iceman Cometh, which I have never seen, but am at least aware of enough to know it is a serious and well-regarded dramatic piece;
4. The reason the name of that play has always stuck with me is that I always thought it was funny to think of Val Kilmer's character from Top Gun Tom "Iceman" Kazansky being a character in a serious high brow stage drama doing this:

One clarification, there can potentially be more than 10 players on the first and second teams combined.

"If there is a tie at a position in football for first team, or a tie for the final player on the first or second team in basketball, then the players who are tied shall be named to the team."

One team away from the rafters! Have we ever had a freshman get there?
Keaton is currently in 8th place with 6 points.

Flemings and Haugh have 5 points, Fears and Wilson have 4 each.

If Keaton gets 3rd team from the USBWA, that puts him at 7, meaning Flemings and Haugh would need 1st team to pass him, and 1st team by Fears and Wilson would only suffice to tie him. I assume he is considered consensus 2nd team even if he's tied for #10, so that means that even in the very unlikely event that USBWA names all of Flemings, Haugh, Fears and Wilson to the 1st team (LOL) that one point would still be enough.

Basically, unless he gets left off this last list entirely and gets no additional points, he is guaranteed a consensus 2nd Team AA and he's getting raftered. Even if he gets left off, it would take both Flemings and Haugh making 2nd team and at least one of Fears and Wilson making 1st team to bump him to 11th in the point rankings, which is extremely unlikely.

Right now, Keaton is 8th in All America voting. The only way he won't be a consensus All American is if USBWA names Jeremy Fears or Caleb Wilson to their 1st team and leaves Keaton off entirely.

So, for all intents and purposes, Keaton has secured consensus status and will have his number honored in the rafters.

Edit: What Juiceman said.

You get points for saying it more succinctly!
