B1G Forfeiture Policy

#2
At the end, it states that there is still a chance for “no-contests” if the game is postponed and unable to be rescheduled.

I hope the B1G is on top of things this year when it comes to conference standings.

I know, I know…don’t hold my breath.

So it will depend on who the school is to determine what the or is?
Get the legal team ready now so there will be no wasted time getting organized when the inevitable crap occurs. The Big Ten Conference needs to have their feet put to the fire. Maybe such a threat of court action will give them pause. One can only hope.

Conversely, a team that is not below the number of requisite competitors and a coach may still determine that it is unsafe to compete. In such case, forfeiture will not be automatic, but an institution would need to demonstrate to the Conference office, including the Chief Medical Officer, the circumstances that have led to a determination that it would be unsafe to compete.

Is there an official statement on how the regular season championship will be determined?

Seems to me like they could make this super simple by saying:

1. All Covid affected conference games will be rescheduled, if possible, with all reasonable attempts to reschedule prioritized.

2. Any game that can’t be rescheduled will be recorded as a loss for the Covid-affected team and a win for its opponent. If both teams are affected, it will be recorded as a loss for both teams.

The whole concept on “no contest” games is what screwed up the standings last year. This way, you either play the games you missed or be penalized. You shouldn’t be allowed to win the conference by sitting out three (or so) games.

Because that's not really fair to the teams. We are at a point where you can do everything "right" (i.e., get your program 100% vaccinated) and still have an outbreak because omicron isn't as susceptible to the vaccines (though they still work to substantially reduce the severity). So you can't really punish a team for something that was outside their control, in my opinion. If you find out there was some kind of negligence involved, however, throw the book at them.

So what happens to the Buckeyes who have been off for 2 weeks and are post-COVID but canceled the game vs UNO to get back into game shape?

Personally, I really don't like the idea of forfeiting because players got sick. Just my humble opinion, but punishing, demonizing, or otherwise "othering" people who get sick (or test positive) is not a good trend in our society right now. More than once, I have heard sportscasters talk negatively about a player who tested positive, implying, at least in their tone, that they must have done something wrong in order to result in a positive test. Not good.

Viruses gonna virus - even if people do everything they can to stay healthy.

What's needed are clear rules about playing once protocols have been cleared and rescheduling games. No extra week of practice to get ready, games must be rescheduled if time slots exist, etc. But in all likelihood, games will be missed. Calling them forfeits just adds more asterisks at the end of the year.
